The conflict began after a German-language speech at a local fest triggered an argument between Robert Schaffner, a Texas German, and Thompson Bell, who was part of a Klan-sympathetic group. Bell later ambushed Schaffner in Sealy, leading to a violent street fight. Robert and his father Fritz Schaffner were killed, along with two of the Bell brothers. The incident exposed deep ethnic and political divisions and helped turn public opinion against the Klan in Central Texas. It remains one of the deadliest clashes in Texas related to anti-German sentiment and prohibition.
