This unit was about teaching kindergarteners math through play-based learning using the number line. The teacher laid out a line on the carpet on day and let the children play with it. The next day the teacher added segments to the line. The following day the teacher added number cards for the children to play with. This activity allowed the children to play with position and quantity on the number line. The teacher was surprised how easy it was to teach math when students understood the idea of the number line. It made sense as the students are already using the language, like 'my birthday is coming up' or 'how many more sleeps".

This teacher used documentation and analysis of the students work and conversations. The teacher used this information to build upon the students understanding of the needs of plants and animals. Sunflowers were put in the classroom, the student sketched and took apart the sunflowers. They explored the sunflower like a scientist. The teacher then posed the question "Why are their seeds missing?" This conversation lead into a seed inquiry. The students collected seeds and sorted seeds and went on field trips. This lead into learning about the life cycle. The students learned the life cycle of salmon and created stories about them.
