the essential skills of composition are basic knowledge of rhythm, melody, tone and texture. Being aware of the possibilities and limitations of instruments and humans. Sometimes having good electronic music knowledge is good to have as well, as some composers like to use electronic tools such as computers and synthesisers.

Some non essential but desirable skills for a composer are actually knowing how to play some of the instruments yourself.

IM not sure on the question "what are the wider but non sessential musical skills?"

My skillset comapred to the things above is very limited, compsing is not my area of work so i dont need to work on it as its not important to me but i could do with improving all those skills as it may help me in the future.

I have received a grade and in depth review on my project 2 work.
I achieved a grade S (satisfactory) but "narrowly mised a grade G".
Things I did well were The practical elements of the project. Here is a statement on what I did well - "You practical elements are very good, especially your performance and guitar playing specifically. This is great to see and you have real promise in this area." So now i know if i keep doing what im doin in the practical elements or do even better all will be good.
Things i need to improve on are my lack of cohesion and sense of narrative that it ideally should have. More consistent research and planning would be where this could be addressed and focused on improving on in that area. I have been told I have the ability to achieve a grade E (distintion) but at the moment im not there yet but on a steady climb.
My thoughts - I think my grade and the review given are accurate and fair, I will make it my main college priority to try and improve on areas im not as strong in to try and get the maximum garde i can achieve within my ability,

IN terms of summary of how i want to write is pretty much have slightly deep meaningful lyrics but with a positive outcome/look of them in the end. Things I think could help me gain more inspiration for writing is clearing my head with any techniques i can look up, Writing in a different area than i usually do etc.

My cutting edge artist is Cassia.
I think they are cutting edge and unique because they are producing a sound which is new and their own and are starting to make bigger and bigger sucsess from it.
Another thing that makes them cutting edge is trying to define what genre they are. whilst most would say theyre an indie band, which they are, their sound isnt a resemblance of soully indie rock. They have mashed genres together such as; Indie rock, Jazz, calypso, as well as unique african and carribean sounding vibes too. Stuff from their early days such as the singles "paradise beach" and their EP and Album inclusions really show of their unique self made genre and good vibe sound.
Here are 3 songs by cassia that are the most different from eachother but showcase a summary of their vibe;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ee_cLGNna2g

https://youtu.be/3de2fo8RkG4

https://youtu.be/PTW_muEFHJI

Their sound through the years.
Cassia have done very well in slightly changing sound and genre as time goes on but keeping the same sound and vibe that people recogise them by.
Whilst their first two singles, Moana and Paradise beach resemble more indie rock with the tropical, african vibe, Their newer stuff resembles similar vibes but in a more indie RandB type genre.

I also need to record with proper equipment next tie so i can ensure quality is present as well as quantity and stop any recordings from being out of time.

I have done some research on what my opposite genre is but first, to find out what it is we need to look at what the main genre I listen too is. This is indie/Britpop Rock. A good way to summarise this genre musically is taking note of all recorings being done 99% with real instruments such as guitar, drums, bass and vocals. Now if we look at my opposite genre, which I have chosen and worked out to be Dubstep. The main reasons being; that dubstep is a heavy electric/edm/drum and bass type music that tends to never use instruments and hardly use vocals, so not only does it sound very different but it is also created very different.

Key skills he had shown in this were, creative composing in writing a main melody/hook and a good ear for noticing miniscule imperfections that he told us he had fiddled with to make the small things even better. Overall, His composition showed great consistency across the whole beat, making it seem as proffesional as possible.

This project has had its ups and downs and many things went well and many things could be improved.
Things that I think went well are; My good understanding of what tasks need doing and how I can achieve completing them. I also did well in giving feedback to other class mates and telling them what went well and what could be proved, as well as noting down on padlet the feedback I was given. I did well in noting down feedback I was given in great detail so I can look back to reflect and build on what I have done because of what I have been told. I also think I did well in Completing practical tasks to the best of my ability, using limited resources and equipment.
What I think could be improved is my ability to take my research to the next level by taking more in depth notes which makes my research tasks look more complete and thorough, which is a good thing. One last thing I think could go better is recording with better equipment but this isnt my fault as there have been complications with getting this equipment and I am doing all the work from home.

How I feel about these things: I feel like there is a good balance of good and bad things after reflecting on my project, obviously bad things arent always a good thing but they arent always a bad thing, as when reviewing something as a bad thing , it can show that I am able to identify where I can make my work even better. I am moderately happy with what I have done this project but I aim to do even better on project 4.

Further Reflection:
Identifying Current practical strengths, Skills and knowledge I have learnt and what I can do differently, as well as how I will achieve it.
Current strengths: The strengths I had before and during this project are my ability to play guitar succsesfully in terms of when I want to record something Ive learnt and for practise in general. I alao think i am good at knowing how to write good structure In the small demo tracks I do for mini tasks or in my free time.
Skills and knowledge I have learnt;
During this project I have further Improved what was my vague knowledge on how to use DAWs, as well as learn more composition skills that I have listed in the research section.

Some things I will do differently next time: The main thing I will do differently is work on my songwriting ability (mainly lyrical) as well as work on the originality and creativity when it comes to writing as I feel my inspirations may be too heavily impacting my demo tracks and composition.

chord advancements -sequencing

Today for our first sequencing task, we were sent away to create a small track where we would start of with 3-4 basic chords and make advancements on them to make them more complex and show our understanding on what works when changing certain things on a chord e.g. changing a G to a G minor by bringing the b note down one semi tone to a b flat. Here are some screenshots of what I did.
I had, like the task said started with some basic chords, mine being; E G, F. How i advanced/changed this was by showing my knowledge of working my way around the keys to identify how to change the chord from major to minor, to change the G and F to minor chords. I then showed the basic skill that demonstrates my ability to know how to change chords when moving up or down a tone or semi tone, in this case, i went up one semi tone to make those two chords change from G and F minor to G#minor and F#minor. Furthermore, i had showed my ability to roll up and down to chords, in this case, after playing the G#minor I briefly moved down to a Gadd#4 before playing the F#minor. Lastly, I added a chord at the end of the sequence which i found out to be called f#o, im not quite sure what the o means but i had identify the notes in that chord and put them into google to find the chord name. Another small add on; when playing the chord sequence a second time round, i figured out that i could also end the sequence on a normal A chord which just added that small change to make the chord sequence that tiny bit more advanced and less simple ,to try demonstrate my slow progress of getting to grips and gaining more knowledge around the sequencing, midi and piano topic stuff. so all and all, I had started out with E G and F and changed them to E G#minor and F#minor with two other chords that can be used as an alternate in the same sequence.

What i had to do was discuss with the group im working with what song out of a choice of 4 we would do and we decided on super massive black hole by muse. We discussed who will be taking what role (guitar, vocals etc) and what section of the song we will be doing. We havent fully decided yet but we are 90% set on the idea of doing the intro through to the end of the first chorus. I went away and learnt my parts, i have learnt the main guitar piece but im thinking of imorvising my own part to fit in as callum may be doing the original guitar piece. Here is my progress so far.

Different types of basses and the way they are tuned:
the standard tuning for a 4 string bass guitar is typically EADG but different genres require them to be tuned differently to produce a different sound. For example, some rock songs are played on a bass tuned in DADG which is only tuning the 4th string (thickest one) down one step to produce a lower, and commonly heavier sound being what is now the low D. If we go even lower to another different but common tuning, we have drop C tuning being CGCF, this tuning is usually used in most metal genres but appear in indie rock ocasionally too.
Different types of basses:
the three most commonly used basses are a regular 4 string, a 5 string and a fretless bass. 5 strings are used more than a 4 string by the more advanced players.

We also briefly looked more into the three chord trick.
We then were set a task to come up with a chord sequence in one of two keys that were had an option of choosing from, we had to advance the basic chord sequence by making them more advanced, changing the qualities and using relative majors and minors. Here is what I did. I worked in Am and used the three chord trick to find that i had to use the chords Em and Dm, I then changed them to 7th chords, moved them an octave higher and finally added Cmaj7 and Fmaj7 as their relative majors.

Project 4 Evaluation

What went well in project 4:
During project 4, I think I succeeded well in the research, planning and diary entry tasks.

Why I think it went well:
The reasoning for why I think these areas of project 4 went well is; I gave good in depth detail and consistent updates on my diary entries which provide good evidence and example of my progress and what I have been getting up to throughout the project. The good evidence of work came in the format of links, videos of myself explaining what I had done and short slide documents.

What didnt go well: Although I think most of the aspects of my project 4 work was positive one thing that could be seen as a negative are certain aspects of my composition.

Why I think it didnt go well:
The reason I think it didnt go to well is because of ,again, the technical issues I have had with my composition. It started of with my home equipment not being functional mixed with me losing my work on the college computer. Because of this, I had to Complete my composition from scratch in a day and a half, which has evidently lead to a lack of quality as I had to focus on getting the quantity of the composition complete as a priority.

A reflection on the Practical work, planning and research:

Practical work:
Looking at my practical work can include the videos of me explaining and performing tasks with my guitar as well as the short composition tasks and of course my main one. My practical work this project has been mainly successful as throughout the term I have completed all of the small practical tasks and provided my journal with video proof where I give a basic summary and perform what I have learnt in the lesson, I then usually followed these videos with a detailed typed explaination.
MY OVERALL THOUGHTS ON MY COMPOSITION:
Id say my composition went well considering everything explained. I felt I had done this main task to the best of my ability.

Planning:

I feel that the planning I did for this project was nothing special but acceptable, I feel like I did what I needed to do and would say it went fairly well. Planning I had done includes; Action plan tables where I layed out what and how I would commence with the tasks in project 4, notes I had jotted down in my journal on padlet that showed my previous ideas for my final composition and finally, I took notes on paper and in a notebook I took more notes that were quick and simple but there for me to build upon.

Research:

I feel that all my research tasks and research I carried out by choice went well and that I completed them with good detail, quality and quantity. Firstly I had decided on my research topic where I had asked myself a few questions about what I need to do, what I feel like I need to focus on etc. I eventually decided on this research question as I felt it would help me gain some ability in one of my weaker areas; What are the best and most beneficial lyrical and songwriting practises that I can use in day to day life?

Next, I repeatedly did research in my Wednesday lessons, I repeatedly spent time researching the relationship and roles of drums and bass (the instruments not the genres lol). I started with the basics of the instruments; what instrumental family theyre a part of (drums being percussion etc) as well as , learning what certain parts of the instrument do etc. I then explained stuff like the theory of the instruments and how they are used in certain situations in music. Drum tasks and bass tasks were carried out individually. I also provided a rhythm section analasys presentation.

Further on into the term we did some more research but this time on harmony instruments. We looked at what instruments they are and how they can be played to make an efficient impact. we also briefly spoke about different ways chords can be played which I explained on the slide.

I then began work on my influences project, where I would have to create a presentation based around what has influenced me during project 4 and possibly helped me make progress on my practical work. In this presentation, I had 3 slides consisting of these topics/questions: What and Who has influenced my project? A bit about who the artist is and a bit about them, What they are known for musically and how I took influence from certain aspects of their work, a song or album that influenced my work and HOW I took influence from it and what I did to my work, or planning of work, after taking initial influence.

My current strengths: Id say my main current strengths are; improvisation and live performance ability. I feel this is right because they are two things I have done enough times to improve on and gain confidence on.

New things Ive learnt from project 4:

Some of the new things I have learnt or developed through doing project 4 are;
my ability to identify how certain drum patterns need basslines to be played a certain way to match them so it sounds right.

How to use adobe spark to create a good quality persentation.

and Certain tasks and techniques I can set myself to help train my lyric writing ability.

What I would do differently:

If i could restart my project, the things that I would do differently are;
Try to be more motavated about the whole project in general but mainly when I am faced with issues that make it harder to complete tasks whether it be technical issues or being stuck when trying to complete tasks.

Put more into the creation of my presentation as I think I couldve improved it massively by; Making it into a video format with a voiceover and keeping the presentation text shorter, then explaining it in more detail in my voiceover.

And Finally, Try to do little drills/tasks based around improving lyric writing ability EVERY DAY as I only did these a few times a week and I feel my final composition wouldve benefited from this.

How I can achieve making these differences possible/achievable for project 5:

Next project I will take into account what I feel Needs to be done differently and get it into my mindset that I will put my all into next project. This can be stuff such as, keeping a set routine in my free or college time for small self made tasks that can help benefit me and the end product of project 5 as well as, just trying my best to have the best mindset and to stay motavated by constantly reminding myself; "this is the main thing Im doing at the moment so I may as well keep at it in good motion" and "I wont regret putting this all into it when I hopefully get a good grade and pass the course" etc.

OVERALL SHORT EVALUATION

I feel that although this project at a lot of downs, it has been one of my best complete projects yet and that I have made significant progress on this compared to all previous projects. Taking into acount everything and all situations, I am happy with the work I have done and am happy with it.

what is mixing? in my own words, mixing is finalising and combining the sound of an audio track to make it suitable to be a released track/song.
mixing is important because it ensures the song sounds as proffesional and adds the correct asthetic for the listener.
panning is when sound emmits either in one side of the headphones or speakers more than the other or when it slowly moves its way between the two or anything similar t these examples.
