The First Ammendment

Congress can't make laws respecting a religion, or prohibiting the free exercise of it or abridging the freedom of speech of the people & press or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

In Tinker v. Des Moines, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the First Amendment applies to public schools. By deciding that school officials cannot censor student speech unless it disrupts the educational process the court set a precedent that is still cited in student free speech cases

The Second Amendment

Being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

Real world examples is allowing people to buy and own weapons, commonly guns.

The Third Amendment

No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

In the revolutionary war soldiers quartered themselves in peoples houses and people had to just live with these strangers with no other choice, so this law was put in place.

The Fourth Amendment

Prohibits unreasonable searches and seizures and sets requirements for issuing warrants: warrants must be issued by a judge or magistrate, justified by probable cause under oath.

Today, this law prevent law enforcement from just entering your home at any given time without permission and if they do this and end up arresting you its technically not legal.

The Fifth Amendment

Nobody can be subjected to the same offence twice (no double jeopardy), nor be a witness against himself in a criminal case,or be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law or private property be taken for public use, without just compensation

In the real world it prevents people from getting charged of the same crime and another example is the house next to VH, they want to tear it down to make a bigger parking lot so they have to give just compensation however if not accepted by the owners then they still cant take the house down.

The Sixth Amendment

This amendment gives citizens the right to jury made of impartial members from the local community, you cant be convicted in this trial unless every thing in the crime has been proven beyond a reasonable doubt by said impartial jury members.

The Seventh Amendment

at common law, where the value in controversy shall exceed twenty dollars, the right of trial by jury shall be preserved, and no fact tried by a jury, shall be otherwise re-examined in any Court of the United States, than according to the rules of the common law.

The Eighth Amendment

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted.

This prevents things like an a million dollar fine for something like smoking in a public area or getting your hand cut off for a crime, or your bail being 3 billion dollars.

The Ninth Amendment

The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people (Even if its not said in the Constitution, people still hold other rights)

For example, the right to vote is universal at a certain age (18 in the US). And the right to privacy which is individuals or couples to have private lives without government interference

The Tenth Amendment

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution or prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States aka the people.

For example, the state being able to collect local taxes.
