Barbara Strozzi (also called Barbara Valle), was born the 6th of August in 1619 in Venice(Italy) and died the 11th November 1677 at the age of 58 years. She was an italian composer and singer of the Baroque Period. During her lifetime, Strozzi published eight volumes of her own music, and had more secular music in print than any other composer of the era. This was archived without any support from the church and with no consistent patronage from the nobility.

She was baptized in the church of Santa Sofia in the Cannaregio district of Venice. Although Barbara's birth certificate does not provide information on her father's identity, it is assumed that her biological father may have been Giulio Strozzi, a poet and librettist, a very influential figure in the seventeenth-century Venice.

-LINK TO A VIDEO OF AN EXAMPLE OF HER MUSIC:
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiRuK7_8bL-AhV1UqQEHWm9CBsQtwJ6BAgGEAI&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DYJ57BC-_T30&usg=AOvVaw027UNdxP6nL3peqdqzlbnR

ELSA, MYRIAM AND MARIA JOSÉ - 1ESO C

Lili Boulanger showed great musical abilities from an early age, fostered by the musical atmosphere of the home where she grew up. Her grandmother was the singer Julliette Boulanger, and her father, Ernest Boulanger (who won the Prix de Rome in 1835) was a composer and professor of voice at the Paris Conservatoire, where he taught Lili's mother, Raïssa Mischetsky. Her sister Nadia already stood out as a composition student at the same conservatory when Lili entered in 1912, also specializing in composition, with Professor Paul Vidal.

Kassia or also Kassiane, Kassiani, Cassia, ST Kasiana.

She was born in Constantinople (Byzantine Empire) in 810- 867 aC. She was a writer, philosopher, poetess and composer of the Byzantine Empire. She stood out for her intelligence, beauty and culture. She was also a strong advocate for the cause of women. She is one of the earliest composers whose works are preserved: approximately fifty of them can be performed by modern musicians and researchers. She was born into an aristocratic family in Constantinople (Byzantium). Around 843 she funded a convent, and became its first abbess. At the beginning of the 7th century, a group of Greek clerics questioned the official version of the christian church about the cult of images. A tradition tells that Kassia was sent into exile for having given to monks and believers in favour of maintaining the cult of images; It is known that she met the monk Teodoro Estudita, one of the leaders of the iconodules. Another tradition tells that Kassia was a candidate to be married with Emperor Theophilus in the year 830; Theophilus was struck by Kassia's beauty. The emperor, trying to start a conversation with her, makes a negative judgment about women saying that Eve is the origin of evil, hoping that she agrees in the same sense; but Kassia holds his gaze and without hesitation replies that the Virgin Mary is also a cause of good. Humiliated by the young woman, Theophilus decided to choose another candidate despite being in love with Kassia. In a public questioning for the election, including a question about whether he preferred her in any way to other women; Not understanding the meaning of the question, Kassia's response was that "in truth, she preferred the greatest woman ever born", referring to the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ according to Christian tradition, which caused her to be rejected as candidate, when his answer was interpreted in the sense in which the question was asked.

Tradition says that Theophilus asked to see Kassia one more time after he died, so he went to the monastery where the poetess wrote her hymn. She left her incomplete hymn on the table and hid behind a door. He looked for her but she was not there. Theophilus wept and lamented for having rejected Kassia. Then he noticed the incomplete hymn on the table and read it. When he finished reading it, he sat down at the table and finished the unfinished hymn. The poetess entered the room after the emperor left, read what he had written, and cried.

She wrote many hymns for Christian liturgy, the most famous probably being The Kassiani Hymn sung on Holy Wednesday.

She wrote about fifty hymns and composed both religious and secular poems. Several melodies of the hymns are currently preserved, although they may have been modified after the manual copies that have been made over the centuries. She also wrote 261 literary pieces.

Reading Kassia's verses allows us to know her.

She died in Kasos, Greece.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AahUIQTseZQ

Avril Pérez, Daniel Sánchez, Ainara Gimenez

Her first marriage was in 1784, with the Marquis André Marie Gautier de Mountgeroult, who was assasinated in 1793 by the Austrians during the period of the terror.

On February 14th 1793, during the period of political turmoil following the French Revolution, her husband was taken prisoner by the Austrians and murdered after serving in Italy. Montgeroult was briefly a victim of the two opposing parties for political reasons: first she was imprisoned by the Austrians and then by the Revolutionary Tribunal, due to her noble ancestry.

Maria Callas was one of the greatest opera singers of the 20th century. Born on December 2nd1923, in New York City.

Her parents were Greek immigrant parents. Callas grew up in a multilingual household where she was exposed to a variety of cultures and languages. Her father, George Kalegoropourous, was a pharmacist and Evangelia Dimitriadou was her mother.

As a child, Callas showed a remarkable talent for music and began taking piano lessons at the age of 7. However, it was her voice that would ultimately set her apart. She began studying singing in her early teens and made her professional debut in 1941, at the age of 18, in a small opera company in Athens . Callas’ career took off in the 1950s and 1960s, when she was widely regarded as the world’s greatest soprano. She was known for her stunning vocal range, which spanned three octaves, and her ability to convey powerful emotions through her singing. She was particularly renowned for her interpretations of the works of Verdi, Puccini, and Bellini.

Callas had a tumultuous personal life. She married Giovanni Battista Meneghini, an Italian industrialist, in 1949, but the marriage was unhappy and ended in divorce in 1959. She then had a tempestuous relationship with Aristotle Onassis, who eventually left her to marry Jacqueline Kennedy.

Callas’ legacy continues to live on today. She recorded dozens of albums during her career and her performances are still widely regarded as some of the greatest in the history of opera. Some of her most famous songs include “Casta Diva” from Bellini’s Norma, “Vissi d’arte” from Puccini’s Tosca, and “Una voce poco fa” from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville.

There are many anecdotes about Callas that have become part of her legend. One of the most famous concerns a performance of Tosca in Rome in 1958. During the final act, when Tosca jumps to her death from the top of the Castel Sant’ Angelo, the stagehands had forgotten to prepare the mattress that was supposed to cushion Callas’ fall. Instead, she landed on the hard stage floor and suffered a painful injury. Despite this, she continued singing and finished the performance, earning a standing ovation from the audience. This incident became known as “the night Callas fell.”

She died in 1977 in Paris.
