Models or Mirrors? Schools and Society Partnered Articles- 1st period by Allison Douglas

Can teachers and students reflect (mirror) society’s values in the way it deals with the problems we have discussed? Can the actions of teachers and students shape (model) the way a society deals with such a problem? Society can have quite an impact on its schools, but schools can also make quite an impression on their society, as well. Which do you think impacts the other most when it comes to the issues of suicide, bullying, racism, gender bias, poverty, social media, peer pressure, and alcohol/drug abuse? With a partner (and using the evidence you found in your research on Monday), pick the 3 most prevalent problems in our schools and in our society, and write an article detailing how our schools mirror the society in which we live and/or how society shapes its behavior based on what is happening in our schools. Be sure to include both your names on your articles! Each of you must then critique the articles of 2 other partnerships (constructive criticism only, please).

Suicide, Drug/alcohol addiction, and social media have a big impact on our schools. These problems can mold our school into something that will be hard to change. Molding the school on bad influences will negatively hurt our school.

Drug/alcohol addiction can cause students to come to school with a weak mindset. At home you may feel good while you’re smoking or doing the drugs. Once the faze of you being high or buzzed wears off you will have many problems. This will make you emotional and easier to react to things. Acting in such a sensitive way will make teaching way harder on teachers. Students will have the “I don’t care” attitude. They will also struggle with learning due to behavior problems. These behavior problems can lead to many different things in the student’s life such as suicide.

Suicide is something that a lot of drug attics deal with. It’s typically when the person is having a hard time with dealing with the way that their body is reacting. At home suicide would be way easier to do because of the lack of attention that you have on you. The lack of attention on you will make you feel more like you’re not needed. At school you will feel as if it’s not worth it because majority of the times you have people there to hold your hand. Suicide can also be thought about when you are being bullied or talked about on social media.

Social media plays a very huge impact on a student’s life. The things that people say and do on social media can affect the school in the major way. Students can often get bullied online as they would while in school. Think about getting bullied at home and then at school. People will literally feel unwelcome anywhere because of the things said or done on social media. At home it’s easier to ignore because you can block people on social media. Once you enter the school building you will or could feel hurt because you will hear everybody talking about it.

Nevertheless, All of these bad influences need to be prevented in the school/ at home. Many different people and websites are working on preventing these types of things. Once you feel as if you are being bullied you can report it online as bullying or harassment. At school, you can report it to a teacher or principal that you are being bullied or feeling unwelcome.

Many things that happen in our schools impact society and things that happen in society impact our schools. Schools and society are connected and each effects each other.

Unfortunately, many people are diagnosed with a mental disorder. Many of these mental disorders such as anxiety can lead to depression which is a mental disorder in itself. Depression is a mental disorder in which a person feels extreme sadness for a long period of time. Depression often lead to suicide, which is when a person kills themselves. Bullying can lead to depression which leads to suicide, and the majority of bullying happens in school. Pressure to succeed, family problems and other factors can lead to depression. Because depression is a increasing problem in our society, schools are doing many things to raise awareness about depression and suicide. Schools often encourage others to talk to someone if they are having suicidal thoughts and highlight symptoms of depression so one can recognize if someone has it.

Also, in society we have many people who live in poverty. Poverty is the state of being extremely poor. Poverty in society can have an affect on how the school operates. Students that live through poverty can have a great struggle during school. Students may not pay attention during class, because they might have aching stomachs from not eating breakfast. Also, students may not attend school most of the time, because of problems they might have at home; such as not having enough clothes or even not having a way to actually get to school. Schools located in areas with poverty often receive a lot of money loans, to help improve the schools performance rate, so that their students can have a better chance at being successful.

In today's society the gap between men and women is becoming more apparent. Historically, women have been discriminated against by men. More recently women have come out about the sexual assaults they have faced by men when the “me too” movement. In schools girls are often taught that they should accept harassment because “boys will be boys” or that “he's teasing you because he likes you”. By teaching these behaviors in schools, we are perpetuating the oppression of women. Boys in school are often teased for “throwing like a girl,” this behavior implies that being a girl is worse than being a boy. The gender bias is often taught in school and carries on into adulthood. This further creates an inequality between girls and boys.

Suicide, poverty, and gender bias affect both schools and societies. Suicide makes both society and school try to raise awareness for depression. Poverty starts at home and impairs a child's ability to learn, which inhibits them from getting a decent job later on. Gender bias is taught in school and it carries on into society creating a gap.

There are many societal and school issues that shape individuals in the world today. Problems inside of school can travel outside of school to the home. This concept is the same when problems could also travel from home to the school house. Issues that could possibly relate to this is social media, poverty, and peer pressure.

Social media affects individuals from all age groups. Cellular devices are extremely popular, and not many children feel comfortable expressing their feelings. Social media is influential in positive and negative ways. Children can reach each other from schools, and some can be very harsh with their words. Most of the time, children don’t believe their words are damaging, but in reality it is the main reason children have trouble in schools and homes.

Poverty can be a problematic issue for everyone in the world. It could most likely be the reason many students are unable to focus on their school work. They could all be distracted about where their next meal is going to come from rather than an essay that is due at the end of class. It is possible that their home could also be abusive, rather it be emotional or physical. These issues terminate a student’s mind. It travels from home into the school house.

Peer pressure is also an issue that is effective in a child’s school and home life. It is evident when the student begins to act out of line in front of a crowd. It is also evident when their patterns change. Peer pressure is when you are forced into doing something because someone persuaded you to do so, even if you feel uncomfortable. Therefore, peer pressure travels from inside the school house to home.

Issues in the world are extremely effective in a student’s life. These issues can come from society or school. A student’s behavior is a pure reflection of what they have gone through inside and outside of school.

Some may not believe that school and society ties together much, but in reality it goes hand-in-hand. There are many factoring issues that plague both school and society. Some of these issues relate to social media more than anything else. The issue of social media soon turns into peer pressure which in some causes leads to all around bullying on both the internet and in person.

Modern social media and peer pressure of society encourages, mostly teenagers, but also younger children to join in on certain trends. While some trends may be good, others tend to be adverse, and sometimes dangerous to a person's healthy. Recently there has been a Tide Pods epidemic where children, teenagers, and some adults have been posting YouTube videos of them chewing and swallowing Tide Pod capsules only to in order gain subscribers and popularity. Because of this trend, “Last year, U.S. poison control centers received reports of more than 10,500 children younger than 5 who were exposed to the capsules. The same year, nearly 220 teens were reportedly exposed, and about 25 percent of those cases were intentional, according to data from the American Association of Poison Control Centers. So far in 2018, there have been 37 reported cases among teenagers — half of them intentional, according to the data.” said Lindsey Bever of The Washington Post.

In the minds of today's people if a certain trend is not followed the person that refuses to follow said trend is automatically labeled as “lame”. Once someone is labeled in such a way some people believe they have the right to make fun of them and make them feel lesser of themselves. This is bullying. In some cases the people being bullied refuse to deal with their problems and turn to bullying others. This makes them now bullies making this an endless cycle of bullying.

To conclude, all of the factors intertwine together eventually. The social media and peer pressure, which leads to endless bullying, creates many problems for everyone that sometimes cannot be solved making both school and society a terrifying and stressful environment for students, parents, and sometimes younger siblings and other family and friends.

Bullying, Peer Pressure, and Drug/Alcohol Addiction can influence the way society acts toward one another. When a student is being bullied it makes them feel bad about themselves. Its changes their self esteem and messes with their mental health. It makes them feel like they’re not good enough.

Peer Pressure can influence the way society acts because if your friends/peers can influence you to try alcohol or drug it can lead to addiction. When people influence you to do something it can lead to bad things. If you get addicted to smoking crack or something because you were pressured by your peers to do so even though you did not want to it could be bad.It could influence the way everyone sees you in the community or in school.

Those whole situations can have a major impacts on school and society. When you deal with all the problems you can be bullied all of these issues lead to each other build up and lead to something.

Bullying, Suicide, and Peer Pressure: By Rachel George & Aniya Holmes

Bullying is the use of force, threat, or abuse to intimidate or aggressively dominate others. It can take the form of physical contact, words, or more subtle actions. Most of the time bullying is caused by peer pressure. Bullying includes teasing, spreading rumors, threatening to hurt someone, hitting someone, and leaving a kid out on purpose. It doesn’t always have to happen in person. Cyberbullying happens online or through text messages. Cyberbullying includes sharing embarrassing pictures or videos, and posting rumors online. Kids who are bullied feel like they are powerless, different, and alone. They also have a hard time standing up for themselves because they feel like the bully has more power over them. Bullying can lead to depression, self harm, school shootings, and suicidal thoughts.

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people. Unfortunately, a vast majority of the incidents lead to death, and without proper treatment to prevent them. Fortunately, suicide is preventable. Most people see suicide as a solution to their problem, but that is not the case. A lot of people that feel suicidal do not tell others they feel this way, because they fear they will be locked up or repressed from society, though it is very important that they get help so they will no longer feel this way. Suicide can occur within all race, ethnicity, age, economical, and social boundaries. In the United States alone, suicide leads to approximately 45,000 deaths a year.

Peer pressure occurs when a child’s friends encourage them to do something harmful or against the law. Peer pressure can happen in person or on social media. Kids often give in to peer pressure because they want to fit in. They want to be liked and they worry that they may be left out or made fun of if they don’t go along with the group. Peer pressure can lead to high levels of stress, negative behavior, and poor decision making. It causes distraction from school work, distance between family and friends, and drastic changes in attitude.
