I used to view inclusion as benefiting members in the community with additional needs. I now view inclusion as something that brings about benefits to the WHOLE community. It's not about offering sympathy to those whom we feel as 'less fortunate' -- probably an altruistic term thrown at us since young by adults and school. It's about a total mindset shift about how our world should be like and the values we should uphold.

They have the opportunity to be educated, and it also means the community accept them.

Inclusive education Through read articles and watch videos, I think inclusive education means everyone have equal opportunity to have school life, special students also should be educated. In an ideal inclusive school, teachers and students are willing to accept the disability student and help them to study in the school. Tina

We must do it to ourselves" This is certainly how I am now framing my Inclusive Education journey!

Inclusion is democracy, equity and love. All of us as human beings have differences from others and we just need to accept these differences as normal things with our greatest inclusion. For instance, some may be physically disables, some may be shy, and some may...... I mean all of these are just our personal differences which should not be big deals at all. We could and should embrace these and find an inclusive harmony. In this society, we are shaping someone and in return someone may be shaping us. This is how human society works. Never shut the door to anyone and I believe there are practical ways to making it happen by educational impacts.

Therefore, they should be treated equity and welcome without segregation or feeling alienated. After watching the three videos, my faith in humanity is raising up as I feel grateful and heartwarming regarding the way peers and friends of those disabled kids act toward and think about them. Acceptance. Welcoming. Including them to the community and events. The kids with disabilities would feel involved in the society and indifferent from other kids around them as they are provided with the education in the same environment and also participating in the sport events with their peers. Every children should be provided with the good education as well as being a part of the community.

Everyone has the right to be educated at school. School is not only a place where we can learn the knowledge and skills, but also receive the proper ethical and morel education. Inclusive Education is a good way to teach students we should treat people with disabilities without discriminations and we should care about them. In this way, students can be positively influenced by their teachers' behaviours, the school environment towards those disabled children. So students studying in inclusive schools will have further understanding of how to get along with disabled people.

Julie

Inclusive education can enlighten other students within the class and school to other peoples’ experiences and that everyone deserves the same level of respect regardless of who they are, where they come from or if they have a disability. Learning to embrace diversity through inclusion in school can have lasting impacts on inclusion within the community and workforce of tomorrow
Lauren

Inclusion means everyone is respected, valued and belongs. Inclusion does not discriminate on any grounds (it is not a case of include those who "fit" or feels convenient), it is underpinned by human rights, social justice movements and an evidence base. Inclusion celebrates diversity and emphasises community and democratic participation. As Slee (2011) cited by Carrington & MacArthur states inclusion is not something that is done to a specific group it is something we must do to ourselves. I now understand inclusion is a journey not a destination.

It not only value adds to those with a disability but also teaches acceptance and understanding to those that are more 'able'. Although the current major focus is on inclusive education, inclusion has to stem beyond that and exist in everyday life and activities. From previously studying an inclusive topic, it has highlighted to me how the 'less abled' especially those in a wheel chair, would struggle to complete simple tasks given the infrastructure in most buildings, schools etc. To be inclusive, we must not only adapt our thinking but also the way in which we plan for the future.

Carlee

However, taking an extra step at this moment, my curiosity to understand "inclusion" with the elements mentioned during the workshop is my new challenge: values, attitudes, relationships, pedagogies, environment. For example, I start to create questions in my mind where I would like to understand what is happening with the training for teachers, how families of people with disabilities receive support. What processes do schools go through to explain inclusion cases to their students? What do families and the community think about schools that support inclusion? What are the standards for providing quality inclusive education? Who defines those standards?

Maria Escobar

I especially enjoyed watching Will support Damian and provide him with lots of positive feedback. This gave me great hope for the future of inclusive education.

Regarding the reading for this week, this quote in particular stuck out to me: "inclusive education emphasises community and democratic participation in which teachers work together to meet the challenges of supporting the diverse needs of students." This quote resonated with me as it highlighted the importance of community involvement in addition to teacher collaboration. In order to meet the needs of all students, we must first work all together. This ensures that each child is being supported fully and treated with a specific and customised education.

Amy M

Of course however funding, resources and skills are a huge barrier for many schools to be able to fully and appropriately support a student with a disability.
As a society we need to change what we do to include people with disabilities, not expect people with disabilities to impossibly change to suit how we currently do things.
Christy Pryor

Before watching these videos, I thought inclusion on education is a kind of acceptance for many people with disabilities and pays more attention to their mental and physical health through learning process. But after watching these examples, I realise that “inclusion” not only means acceptance but also embracement. Every student has their own unique personality. People with disabilities are similar to normal students with uniqueness. They may not need sympathy but inclusion. To achieve better and equal education, it would be profitable to accept and embrace every child’s uniqueness especially disabilities.

Angela

Inclusion is about valuing diversity and choosing to act in a way that ensures every student is able to participate and receive an education. I loved the 3Rs - reflection, reflexivity & responsibility!

Students with disabilities and students with different needs, including gender, income and family background, are taught in the same school in the same classroom, which promotes acceptance and respect for everyone's diversity. In an inclusive classroom, instead of all students learning in the same way, it is possible to see all students as individuals and learning differently. Inclusion focuses on what students can do rather than can not do in order to find the strengths of the learner. Besides, special groups and ordinary students can learn from each other, students with disabilities are equal to normal students, and many of them have excellent intelligence and potential in a certain area. In addition, inclusion helps children with disabilities to better integrate into the community, help students feel their own value, and make it easier to adapt to their life and study.
Anna Jiang

My thoughts on inclusion

My thoughts on inclusion have changed a lot. I have realised that what I thought was 'inclusion' is actually not inclusion at all. I think there is a huge misconception regarding integration and segregation as inclusion within mainstream education. I think integration and segregation is the easy way out however inclusion within schools will not be possible without ALL included in education having a very clear understating of what inclusion is and what inclusion is not. I'm excited to continue learning and develop myself as a more inclusive educator. I have lots to share with my team already.

Steph

The unit material provided this week have in fact made me question my own understanding of inclusion. Although I had the understanding that inclusion was about making adjustments to content, teaching, assessments and the environment to ensure that all students are provided opportunities to grow and learning, I reflect on my own and my school's environment to find that perhaps we have been more about "integrating" students rather than "including". I now understand that there is a clear difference and is something I will think more more about as I refine my own teaching practice throughout this course.

Louise
