In the first stage, the child or student is first learning a new skill and requires help from someone with greater knowledge. In the second stage, the child or student gains understanding of the new subject and he or she performs the task without relying on the person who was assisting him/her. The student may not have mastered the skill yet but is able to do it by themselves with maybe an occasional mistake. The third stage, the student is at the point where he/she has fully developed his/her own level of expertise.
