Summary

Dante and Virgil are moving through the eighth circle when Dante comes to the second Bolgia or pit and it suddenly smells horrific. That smell is because of the flatterers. The souls trapped there are stuck submerging or sinking in a slimy river for eternity. Their punishment is a contrapasso because the flatterers souls are drowning in their own desperation. When the souls were living they would put on their "charm" and convince people to do things for them. The flatterers did not work hard, they took the easy way out and were desperate for attention, so the punishment is suiting.

Thais

Towards the end of the passage, Virgil tells Dante to look beyond Allessio to see Thais. Thais has a routine of scratching herself with her "dingy nails" along with her twitching into a crouch position. Thais was put here because she was instigated the burning of Persepolis and was the lover of Ptolemy I Soter, one of Alexander's generals, and also may have been Alexander's lover. Thais' lover sent her a slave, and he then sent another to check if she had thanked him, but Thais became too greedy and answered with sarcasm.

Allessio is the first soul Dante sees when him and Virgil reach the greatest height in the Bolgia. It is hard for Dante to see because Allessio is covered in grime and surrounded by other sinners. Allessio was alive when The Inferno was being written, and was powerful member among the white family Lucca. There is not much known about him, but he is known to be an extreme flatterer
