That smell is because of the flatterers. The souls trapped there are stuck submerging or sinking in a slimy river for eternity. Their punishment is a contrapasso because the flatterers souls are drowning in their own desperation. When the souls were living they would put on their "charm" and convince people to do things for them. Thais has a routine of scratching herself with her "dingy nails" along with her twitching into a crouch position. Thais was put here because she was  instigated the burning of Persepolis and was the lover of Ptolemy I Soter, one of Alexander's generals, and also may have been Alexander's lover.
