I. The Moral Issue

- Humans are having a massive negative impact on the environment. In the current day, humans are rapidly leading the planet towards a massive sixth extinction. There have been five in the past, and this one is on track to be just as deadly. A quote from a book, 'The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History," by Elizabeth Kolbert sums up humans' impact on the word in one simple statement. The quote states, "When the environment changes faster than a species can adapt, many fall out. This is the case whether the agent falls from the sky in a fiery streak or drives to work in a Honda." The human race tends to put the blame on other people. Extinction is often associated with deforestation, hunting, etc. The truth of the matter is that the entire human race is contributing to it. No matter what humans do, they contribute to the destruction of the environment. Simply driving to work in a car contributes to climate change. It is important to note that these changes occur on on land and sea.

IV. How it Violates the Commandments

- The destruction of the environment violates the Ten Commandments in two major ways: thou shall not kill and thou shall not steal.
- God gave humans the responsibility to care for His Creation. By hurting the environment, we are disobeying God. We are doing this by killing species. It does not matter if the person is a hunter or someone who drives to work in a car. We are all the problem. It is (somewhat) inevitable.
- We are also stealing from all of the species on this planet. Humans have taken over all parts of the world, and hurt the environment in the process. Through our rapidly expanding infrastructure and transportation systems, we have taken the homes from many creatures. Subsequently, we have taken away their food sources, water sources, and families.

V. Possible Solution to the Problem

- This is a very complex issue that is impossible to stop completely. Unless humans give up all their progress and return to primitive ways, we will still hurt the environment. Therefore, this is not a matter of solving the problem. It is more a matter of reducing our impact on the world. First of all, humans need to look for better sources of energy. We should avoid burning fossil fuels, since it puts more carbon into the atmosphere at a fast rate. Conservation efforts should also improve. A major problem is the lack of knowledge among the people of the world. If more people are informed of our precarious situation, change will most likely happen faster. In addition, limitations on hunters should become more rigid. There are often stories on the news when someone kills an endangered species. Penalties should be increased, which will discourage hunters from attacking endangered animals. I also believe more natural landscapes should be preserved from human encroachment. This will ensure the safety of the species living in that area. There should also be increased inspections on vehicles traveling from one country to the next. Sometimes species are on these vehicles without humans even knowing. This can lead to invasive species that could have been avoided. Finally, humans should evaluate their own actions. If something is beneficial to them, but hurting many other species in the process, is it really benefiting them? If humans can develop this mindset, the environment will start seeing changes for the better. The extinction rate will decline, and the quality of life for many species will improve.

II. Effects on the Land

- Humans' reckless burning of fossil fuels is releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere at an unprecedented rate. This increase in carbon helps raise the temperature, which can cause deadly results for many species. A very blatant example of this deals with the polar ice caps. As the polar ice caps melt, many species are losing their habitats. This will lead many species to an inevitable extinction. In addition to this, species need to move north to counteract this increase in temperature. Unfortunately, some species cannot migrate fast enough, and will go extinct before they can move to a suitable environment.
- Humans' mass transportation system also hurts the environment. As more infrastructure is built, including roads, natural habitats are destroyed. Just like the species living on the polar ice caps, these species lose their habitat. With nowhere to go, their lives are at serious risk of death. In addition, the transportation system has allowed species to spread across the world. In the past, species on one island would typically remain on that island alone. Now, species can easily move to new places. This can lead to invasive species, which take over the environment and hurt the species living there. One example is the Panamanian Golden Frog, which was very common throughout Panama. After a chytrid fungus spread throughout the forests of Panama, the frog species went extinct in the wild. The fungus clogged their pores, and prevented them from getting necessary electrolytes. This caused the frogs to have a heart attack.

III. Effects in the Sea

- The release of massive amounts of carbon into the atmosphere has profound effects in the sea. Approximately one-third of the carbon released into the atmosphere is absorbed into the ocean. This equates to 1.5 billion tons of carbons. As a result of this, the pH level of the ocean has declined by approximately .3. This has made the ocean more acidic, and led many species to extinction. If the ocean acidification continues at its current rate, coral reefs are expected to disappear in the next fifty years. This will cause huge problems for many species in the ocean. Coral reefs are a keystone species, which means many other species depend on it for their survival. It is estimated that four thousand fish species depend on the coral reefs. Therefore, once the keystone species is gone, many other species will certainly follow. It is likely that thousands of species will be hurt by the disappearance of coral reefs.
