This is a great way for students to learn different ways to be kind to one another and for them to also get to know one another. This activity is essentially a concept that says that everyone has an invisible bucket that they carry around with them. This bucket holds the emotions and feelings that a student has. When their bucket is full, the student is feeling happy and seen, but when the bucket is empty, the student is probably feeling sad and alone. Students will be the bucket fillers for one another and will say or write positive and nice comments for their peers. This is where the relationship building comes into place. The students will learn more about their peers and will find those relationships they have with each other. This is very similar to "show and tell", but focuses on the emotional and communication aspect. This will be an activity that the teacher will be involved in as well. This could mean bringing an item in and sharing it or telling what the student did over the weekend. From the teacher's perspective, the teacher could share any information about his/her life. This could be showing pets, talking about family, or discussing an emotional event like being excited about a new item. This will allow the teacher and students to feel more comfortable with one another. It also will allow more knowledge to be gained in the class. This will allow for a more open and caring environment. It may be beneficial to use a journal for students to share if working with older students. This could occur every Monday for the students to share the previous weekend or any other information. In this activity there is three divided teams from the classroom. Each team stands on the blanket, but not taking up the whole blanket space. I think this is a great starter relationship activity because in order to turn over the blanket everyone on the team will have communicate and work together to turn over the blanket. If there is even one student who is not listening or working as part of the team it is very difficult to complete the task. I think the learning goal of blanket switch is to try to get the students to naturally work together as a team. I really like this activity because it gives the students freedom to choose what they want for the day. Lastly, I feel like this activity is a great exercise to make the students feel the classroom is a safe environment. I stumbled across this activity as it was an ad that popped up on my computer when I was listening to a song on YouTube. I think this a very creative idea where you can get to know your student well and they can also show the class more about themselves. If some of the students are uncomfortable and don't want to share, you can always tell them that they could share it with you (the teacher) personally. I also think this idea is a great way to incorporate their creative skills of drawing or using other fun markers (especially for younger kiddos!). I want to incorporate it into my future classroom. I really love the idea of this activity because it allows students to express themselves through physical objects from their homes. It also allows them to be creative when it comes to expressing themselves. It is a way for me as a teacher to get a better understanding of my students and also allows students to make connections with their peers. 
The students are able to bring a few items from their homes to display on their desk or their workspace. Along with the items students are asked to write a description of the item they brought. Depending on the age level you can change how students present their items. For younger children who aren't sure how to read or write yet, it may be easier to have the student show their items to the class and talk a little about each item.

Turning this story into an activity (such as the one shown) gives an opportunity for students to write positive notes and feedback. The bucket-filler activity can be used in many ways to create a positive classroom environment and build relationships. The teacher could randomly assign a peer for each student to fill a bucket or the activity could rotate the focus of the activity so that everyone is writing a note for the same person. I like this activity because it gives students the opportunity to give feedback to each other, but also to receive feedback from their peers. I always chose the lunch option as I loved how intentional that time was spent getting to know each other better in a small group setting.
 
 I would incorporate this relationship building activity slightly different in my classroom. (See the picture for how I would prefer the set up). This set up would act as a behavior incentive and allow me to get to know students more personally. 
 
 The learning goal of this activity is to ensure every student feels a sense of belonging and feels known on a deeper level.

This is a great resource to have to make students feel as though you care about their success and well-being. In this case is was used with older kids could but it could be used with kids as young as first grade. I really enjoy the idea of this activity and how much fun my student would have participating in it. It could also be a great activity that the teacher could participate in with their students. The kids come together and are put into two teams and then they are blindfolded with the exception of the last person at the end of the line. They are lead to the object on the floor then they they have to get down on all fours and pick it up and then stand back up then they are directed to the bucket where they have drop the object into and once that is done the person in front goes to the back of the line and is the new leader to the front person. This activity is very uplifting and fun and it is extremely interactive with all the students that participate. It allows the students to make connections with their peers and give them something fun to talk about. I also saved it because I remember doing this in my third grade class and everyone was so excited. 
I would start with the activity in the classroom, with students decorating their bags and making them show their personalities. I would provide glitter glue, pip cleaners, markers, etc.
It would then be sent home with a note. The note would detail that the student can pick five things (this can be a picture, something they use during a hobby, etc.). The goal of this activity is for students to share with both me and their fellow students what they like/value. I would steer away from materialistic things as this may divide students due to their socioeconomic  status.

This activity leads into my next one which is calling home. Most parents associate calls from school as being bad news about poor behavior or performance. I would love as teacher to change this interpretation of hearing from school and leaving a positive impression by informing the guardian how well their child did that week. I can bring the student in on the conversation as well, and they can give their side of the story. After meeting them at the door and greeting them by name, I would have them head over to check-in and order their lunch, using similar formats for both. It would be easy to prepare for the teacher and easy for the student to check-in quickly each morning. Very visual and easy for younger students to understand, even if they don't know how to read the words because they can use the pictures to understand the feelings. It is so important to know how they are doing when they come in and leave each day. I would also have the students check-out towards the end of the day as well to see if they are feeling better, worse, or the same after being at school. If you wanted to be more private about it, you could assign the students a color and number on their stick instead of putting their names on it. If they are struggling, really sad, etc., I would make it a priority to talk to them individually about it throughout the day. This would help teachers and students to connect and form a trusting relationship with one another. During morning meeting I would incorporate think, pair, share time on a topic or question for the day. And then draw name sticks for 2-4 kiddos each day so everyone gets an opportunity to share if they want to.
