Holden, in general, has a peculiar perspective of how he views women. As with him being emotionally indifferent towards his own independence in relationships, Holden views women as innocent and is indifferent in his preference of how they look. Holden’s preferences on women are seeming to change, however, as the novel goes on. Holden seems to view women as people in the sense that they can be conversed with and partake in civil discussions, but his view of them is rather counter-intuitive. He states the stereotype that smart girls can’t dance, but maintains the stance that most girls aren’t that smart. He remains subtly sexist through indirect manners of speech. Many times it can be seen where Holden objectifies women, such as where he’s dancing with the girl in the nightclub and comments on how “That’s the thing about girls. Every time they do something pretty, even if they’re not much to look at, or even if they’re sort of stupid, you fall half in love with them, and then you never know where the hell you are,” (Salinger 73). Despite this, he idealizes and is highly intrigued by women. He sounds highly sentimental when speaking in regards to Jane. He indirectly states that they didn’t do anything inherently sexual, but rather he prioritizes his happiness within his companionship with Jane. This is how Holden attempts to function in a majority of his relationships with women. Against all of this, however, he still possesses a sexual view of women, despite all of his morals. He speaks in a highly insulting tone regarding their physical appearances, but tends to regard their sexual wishes in most opportunities he gets. “I mean--she keeps telling you to stop. The trouble with me is, I stop,” (92). Holden reveals that he stops when they wish him to, but based on what he’s heard from others, stopping is seen as the wrong thing to do. It isn’t right at that time societally to respect the wishes of women, but Holden does. Holden possesses many peculiar qualities that contradict each other when it comes to women. He respects their wishes, but not their body, respects their companionship, but not their intellect, and idealizes their actions as the beautiful part of their souls.

In the novel catcher in the rye by DJ Salinger, Holden seems to struggle with his sexuallity and insecurities with sex and women. His thoughts and comments reveal his confusion, insecurity and discomfort. In chapter nine Holden states “In my mind , I'm probably the biggest sex ,maniac you ever saw. Sometimes I can think of very crumby stuff I wouldn't mind doing if the opportunity came up”(Salinger 62). Holden is admitting to the fact that he thinks about sex but his use of the word crummy inflicts that he is feeling conflicted ,guilty or embarrassed by his sexual thoughts. Holden also stops himself during intimate situations.“The thing is, most of the time when you’re coming pretty close to doing it with a girl... she keeps telling you to stop. The trouble with me is, I stop. Most guys don’t. I can’t help it. You never know whether they really want you to stop, or whether they’re just scared as hell... I mean I’ve had quite a few opportunities to lose my virginity and all, but I’ve never got around to it yet. Something always happens.”(92). This shows Holden's hesitation when it comes to intimate situations. He overthinks the situation and feels uncertain about whether the girl actually wants him or not, leading him to back away. His indecisiveness reflects his insecurity about sex.

Holden Caulfield has an extremely complicated relationship with sexuality. He shows possible signs of being gay or bi, such as his relationship with Stradlater. He talks about how he is bothered by Stradlater’s date with Jane, but he focuses on how he “knew that guy Stradlater’s technique,” (Salinger, 49). He goes into detail about how Stradlater gets women to have sex with him, rather than really mentioning the girl in question. We see him talk about Stradlater in a similar way several times, such as when he says, “He always walked around in his bare torso because he thought he had a damn good build. He did, too. I have to admit it,” (26) or “I already told you what a sexy bastard Stradlater was,” (34). He seems to think very often about how attractive he finds Stradlater, and corrects by mentioning the women he keeps around. In this time it was very forbidden to be gay, as seen when Luce says “half the married guys in the world were flits,” (143). Holden heavily represses these feelings he has because he’s been raised to believe how he feels is wrong. He knows that regardless of his feelings, he is expected to marry a woman and have a family. Another reason he may repress this is because of something that happened in his past. When he visits Mr. Antolini, he says, “I know more damn perverts, at schools and all, than anybody you ever met, and they’re always being perverty when I’m around,” (192) as well as, “That kind of stuff’s happened to me about twenty times since I was a kid. I can’t stand it,” (193). Holden may have experienced some mistreatment in the past from teachers or other people he trusts in his life. That may be why he fixates on other people in regards to sex, especially Stradlater, but then when he gets that close to them he loses all interest and is disgusted by them.

It is quite clear Holden has an interesting infatuation with sex and how he views sexual interactions. Some may assume it is just him being weird or a teenage boy, however I believe his infatuation with sex is due to past sexual abuse. People with trauma are often obsessed with things centering around the subject of their trauma.

“Boy, I was shaking like a madman. I was sweating too perverty like that happens, I start sweating like a bastard. That kind of stuff’s happened to me about twenty times since I was a kid. I can’t stand it,” (Salinger Chapter 24). This right here is a major sign of trauma related to sexual abuse, specifically with a man. Even if Holden does not recall the possible trauma, he shows multiple signs of trauma from past sexual abuse. He is clearly stressed due to the shaking and sweating. What is really interesting is how he says that stuff like this has happened twenty times since he was a kid. The fact he recalls a specific number is a major sign this is something that has affected him majorly.

“I started putting on my damn pants in the dark. I could hardly even get them on I was so damn nervous. I know more damn perverts, at schools and all, than anybody you ever met, and they’re always being perverty when I’m around,” (192). This quote is another great example of Holden feeling uncomfortable around men and sexually and the fact this always happens to him. Mr. Antonlini was being very weird, and Holden once again had this PTSD like reaction. Of course the situation would scare anyone but Holden refers to past trauma and says this stuff always happens to him.

Considering Holdens symptoms and behavior it is more than likely he was sexually abused. The sweating and shaking and utter fear are all signs he has gone through it before and how much it destroyed him. It’s possible this happened at a young age or in his teenage years. Due to the fact all these situations are with males it’s possible this past abuse was with a male. Holden is not infatuated with sex because he is sex crazed, but because he has trauma so deeply rooted he is trying to figure out how to cope and what sex really is.

In J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield's relationship with sexuality shows his deep insecurities and longing for innocence in a world he finds overwhelming. He often seems both fascinated by and repulsed by sex, highlighting his internal struggle. For example, when he takes a prostitute home he mentions “I took her dress over to the closet and hung it up for her. It was funny. It made me feel sort of sad when I hung it up.” ( Salinger 95 ) This quote captures his conflicted feelings—he wants something but he also recognizes how this girl might feel. Holden’s desire conflicts again when he notices a pretty girl getting water squirted on her face. He says “Im probably the biggest sex maniac you ever saw. Sometimes I can think of very crumby stuff I wouldn’t mind doing if the opportunity came up.” (62) But then later he says “I think if you don’t like the girl you shouldn’t horse around with her at all. If you do like her then you’re supposed to like her face.” (62) This reveals how much he values innocence and fears losing it. In many ways, his aversion to sex isn’t just about physical intimacy; it’s about a deeper yearning for genuine connection in a world that feels increasingly phony. Through Holden, we see a young man grappling with the complexities of growing up, longing for closeness while also wanting to shield himself and others from the pain that often comes with it.

Holden’s obsession with sex and his fixation on Stradlater are prominent parts of Holden’s character in J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in The Rye.” Holden’s thoughts often drift to sex, showing his confusion, discomfort, and fixation on the subject. For instance, “In my mind, I’m probably the biggest sex maniac you ever saw,” (pg 62). This shows his lust for sex, despite him consistently expressing disdain for the way other people engage in it. His obsession with Stradlater is equally as telling. Holden is both fascinated and repelled by Stradlater’s sexual experience. He describes Stradlater as a, “Sexy Bastard,” indicating his admiration for Stradlater. Holden also focuses on Stradlater and his “technique.” For example, “What a technique that guy had. What he’d do was, he’d start snowing his date in this very quiet, sincere voice—like as if he wasn’t only a very handsome guy but a nice, sincere guy, too. I damn near puked, listening to him. His date kept saying, “No—please. Please, don’t. Please.”(pg 49) Holden’s mixture of admiration and jealousy highlights his inner struggle with sex and his struggles to understand his own sexual identity and feelings. Through these obsessions, Salinger paints a vivid picture of Holden’s complex personality and his struggle from becoming an adult.

Holden’s ideals on women end up apparently changing for a short time, however, when he tells the reader about him horsing around with a girl before they went to the theater. “At first she didn't want to, because she had her lipstick on and all, but I was being seductive as hell and she didn't have any alternative,” (17.10). This quote is striking to the reader, as it goes against anything previously stated directly or indirectly about Holden’s values toward women. It appears that he disregards his prior values and disrespects the initial desires of the women, but almost paints it in a positive light, stating how he was seductive. Holden’s values are inconsistent with his actions, which makes all of his values untrusted within the reader’s eyes. Are the values stated really Holden's values on women, or are they phony? Does he respect their wishes, but not their bodies? Does he not respect women at all? The reader, from a certain point on, can’t tell what Holden’s actual stance on women is based on that action alone. There is no true way to tell if his values are what he directly or even indirectly states because many of his actions contradict each other in nature. The reader is left with a dilemma: should they believe Holden? As far as I am concerned, I don’t believe Holden personally meant anything crazy by this previous quote. Holden, while phony in the stated fact that he lies a lot, is very genuine in the sense of his values to the reader. I personally believe that Holden respects the wishes of women and values their companionship, but he still is a college-age boy who is keen on losing his virginity. Sometimes, when people are pressured by societal expectations or expectations of peers, they commit acts outside of their comfort zone. I believe that Holden’s true values remain intact; moreover, that they are strengthened by this experience. I think that because of the societal expectation to objectify women at the time and the pressure from his peers to lose his virginity caused him to push himself past his moral limits and fool around with the girl in the cab. Holden remains indifferent to his values although his actions are contradictory in my opinion.

Holden Caulfield, still a young man, still has nothing figured out. I believe we need to take into consideration how much Holden still doesn’t understand. He mentioned earlier in the story that he’s immature for his age, and he has a lot of room to grow. When we’re asked to evaluate Holden’s sexuality, understanding that majority of the time Holden has no idea what he’s doing about this and everything else in his life is key to forming an accurate opinion. In my mind it’s pretty obvious what Holden wants, it’s something that naturally every human wants more than anything else in our life. Holden wants to be in love. Perhaps he sees sex as an opportunity, a chance to be with someone and get rid of all sensations of loneliness and abandonment that he shows signs of feeling. Holden’s always second guessing himself trying to ensure that he’s saying and doing all the right things. When speaking to Miss Faith Cavendish, Holden was searching for some company but beat himself up about everything that he said, “What a dope I was. I shouldn’t’ve said that… Boy, I really fouled that up. I should’ve at least made it for cocktails or something” (Salinger 66). He’s studying himself, every word he says is later reviewed and it can either make or break the way he feels. In my mind, this represents his craving to be with someone. Ensuring each and every detail about his character is on a trajectory of finding his person, someone to spend time with. Furthermore, I believe this is why Jane Gallagher affects Holden so deeply, because he was once in love with her, and it’s very possible that he still is. There is not a question you could ask Holden about their time together as children that he would not know the answer to. He remembers Jane and all the good times they spent together, it’s exactly what he was looking for at this time period in his life. The thought of Jane alone brings him so much joy, “I held hands with her all the time for instance. That doesn’t sound like much, I realize but she was terrific to hold hands with… And without changing the position or making a big deal out of it. You never even worried, with Jane, whether your hand was sweaty or not. All you knew was, you were happy. You really were” (79). Even though there wasn’t any serious form of intimacy or affection, the minor things were more than enough for Holden. Even looking back years later, he reflects on the moment they would hold hands with each other, he reflects on the happiness he felt. It wasn’t a sexual need for Holden now or then or ever that’s been controlling his mind. It’s the need for someone somewhere to wrap him up in their arms and tell him they’re there for him.

Holden Caulfield's sexuality can be defined in one word: Heterosexual. First, the idea that he is "gay" is wrong. The main defense for this point is the interaction with Stradlater in Chapter 4 where he calls Stradlater "handsome" and "pretty sexy" but in the context of the situation we find that he is simply making observations. If you see a handsome fellow who acts to seem "sexy" to women, a man commenting and saying that he is handsome is like a woman complimenting another woman for looking beautiful.

Secondly, Holden has tried to advance with many women sexually or intimately and shows attraction towards them such as his obsession with Jane Gallagher. "I could hardly stop myself from sort of giving her a kiss on the top of her dopey head-you know- right where the part is, and all." (Salinger 72). The quote above shows that whilst liking women, the women he interacts with sexually, he does not like. The reason for this is that Holden is looking for a genuine relationship, not a hookup for one night. Holden wants genuine love, compassion, and understanding.

Thirdly, Holden has rejected sexual advances or been repulsed by them at the last minute because he values authentic relationships like the one he has or had with Jane Gallagher. Holden has mentioned Jane many times in the book with almost an obsession; however, who could blame him. In one quote Holden states, “I really got to know her quite intimately. I don’t mean it was anything physical or anything-it wasn’t- but we saw each other all the time. You don’t always have to get too sexy to get to know a girl.” (76). The first time that Holden had feelings for somebody it was in a non-sexual manner and he held onto that idea of love, authentic love and authenticity. Meanwhile, Holden is interacting with whores who do not care about him authentically like Jane does and so he does not feel like committing his body and soul to them. Holden would rather commit his body and soul to something more authentic, somebody he knows and deeply loves rather than somebody who doesn’t care what he is talking about or doing. A good example of this is in the Lavender Room when Holden is dancing with a blond girl, “She wasn’t listening, though. So I ignored her for a while. We just danced. God, could that dopey girl dance.” (71). The whorish looking blond that Holden is dancing with represents the wider problem Holden has with these types of women and people in general, Holden is not attracted to phonies. These phonies might be good at what they do with Holden like running a school, dancing, or having sex but they are not good at being genuine and authentic by listening and responding to dialogue because they could care less what Holden has to say, they just see him as another student, partner, or hookup.

In conclusion, Holden Caulfield’s sexuality can be defined in one word: Heterosexual. Firstly, Holden commenting on Stradlater’s looks is simply that, a complement from man to man. Secondly, Holden has tried to advance with many women sexually and intimately and shows attraction towards them such as his obsession with Jane Gallagher. Lastly, Holden has rejected sexual advances or been repulsed by them at the last minute because he values authentic relationships like the one he has or had with Jane Gallagher.

Holden simply wants a real relationship, not just someone to sleep around with. That's why he is bothered so greatly by women who have lost their innocence because that is not the kind of woman he wants in his life. Holden Caulfield has lost his brother, sent away to boarding school, and fails every single academic thing he does. That is some heavy weight on his shoulders that he wants someone to help him unburden. The companionship of another is something that Holden has been waning for, as you can see in the feeling when he holds Jane’s hand. “All you knew was, you were happy. You really were”(Salinger 79). Holden has never felt that love of someone possibly since his brother passed away. He misses that love that helped to relieve him of the stress of this world. However, even though he wants a real relationship he is terrible at talking to women, “She’s not too hot, though. She does everything she’s supposed to, but she’s not so hot anyway”(71). Why would a person ever talk about the attractiveness of another woman with a woman? Plus, she's not even listening. It seems as if he never has talked to a woman. However, that doesn't make him homosexual if he struggles talking to women or is awkward around other people. Holden hasn't had any practice. On the other hand Holden does “self sabotage” but it is less of taking away something from himself and more of a self preservation technique. Caulfield already has a lot of hurt in him, so he doesn't want to hurt himself anymore. Internally when he is pushing someone away he is protecting himself from the chance of getting hurt. Yet you cannot find that relationship and companionship without taking a chance. That is why Holden continues to search for this perfect innocent woman who cannot hurt him. Someone who will be a companion and give him that same loving feeling Jane did.

Holden Caulfields sexuality is very complex and reflects his confusion of growing up. He likes to talk about sex, but inside he is really conflicted and unsure of his true desires. There are so many ways to talk about his sexuality. I will break down just some of them today. First , His feelings for men. In the book, Mr Antolini got touchy with Holden as he was sleeping and he reacted in a certain way. He was shocked because he woke up to a dude petting/stroking his head. “ I felt something on my head, some guys hand. Boy, it really scared hell out of me. What it was, it was Mr, Antolini’s hand. What he was doing … he was sort of petting me or patting me on the goddam head.” ( Salinger 191-192) this quote relates to him getting a pet and his reaction. He was almost stunned not knowing what to do. His voice almost sounded frantic/scared. He got up and was unsure of what to do. Also, if that was a sexual advance. Some readers take that part of the book and put a label on Holden that he might be gay but I feel that he is just confused with all his hormones and growing up in general. The next point I'd like to touch on is him. I feel that Holden does not view sex as an emotional connection between partners. I say this due to the fact that he was going to get a girl that he heard of a friend who is always having sex. So he called her up and asked her to go get a cocktail but she said no."This girl that wasn't exactly a whore or anything but that didn’t mind doing it once in a while” ( pg 63) this quote is meant to show him trying to have a connection. Sex is supposed to be an emotional commitment between partners. In church, they preach not having sex until marriage because then you are committed to your partner. Holden is a very complex character with emotions and he is living life figuring things out as they come.

Holden is having a hard time dealing with his sexuality and identity. He has a very strange idea of women, and he immediately thinks any woman has feelings or a sense of attraction towards Holden. “Women kill me. They really do. I don’t mean I'm oversexed or anything like that -- although I am quite sexy” (Salinger 54). Holden is stating how he does have a deep attraction for most women. They make him feel some sort of way that he’s never felt before, which comes to show how he’s having a hard time dealing with his sexuality. Holden also states, “I spent the whole night necking with a terrible phony named Anne Louise Sherman. Sex is something I just don’t understand” (63). Holden is confused with his love life, as he says that he doesn’t understand sex but gets with other girls quite often. He has a very on and off relationship with sex, making him confused on what he really wants in life. Holden also says, “All you had to do was touch her. And when she turned around, her pretty little butt twitched so nice and all” (73). Holden clearly has a deep attraction for girls, which seems to be almost controlling his life. He could definitely be straight, but he’s a teenage boy strictly struggling to figure out who he is. Nobody really knows his sexuality except for Holden himself.

I think that Holden is straight in terms of being physically attracted to someone but is so emotionally unavailable that he couldn’t be romantically attracted to anyone. On page 73 Holden says, “I apologized like a madman, because the band was starting a fast one. She started jitterbugging with me- but very nice and easy, not corny. She was really good. All you had to do was touch her. And when she turned around, her pretty little butt twitched so nice and all. She knocked me out. I mean it. I was half in love with her by the time we sat down. That’s the thing about girls. Every time they do something pretty, even if they’re sort of stupid, you fall half in love with them, and then you never know where the hell you are. Girls. Jesus Christ. They drive you crazy. They really can.” When talking about this girl he says that he’s attracted to her body and falls in love with it but when it comes to liking her romantically, he talks very poorly about her and doesn’t actually like her. On page 79 Holden states, “ I held hands with her all the time, for instance. That doesn’t sound like much, I realize, but she was terrific to hold hands with. Most girls if you hold hands with them, their goddamn hand dies on you, or else they think they hate to keep moving their hand all the tim, as if they were afraid they’d bore you or something. Jane was different. We’d get into a goddamn movie or something, and right away we’d start holding hands, and we wouldn’t have quit till the movie was over. And without changing the position or making a big deal out of it. You never even worried, with Jane, whether your hand was sweaty or not. All you knew was. You were happy. You really were.” Each time he talks about Jane it doesn’t feel like he likes her romantically but rather in a comforting way, like she’s a safe space for him. Again, even though he’s not talking about her sexually, he talks about her body and not her personality and how she makes him feel happy.

Holden is a very confused teenager. He tries to fit in, but he is very lonely. He struggles to have friends that he actually likes, and he has outwardly told us he is lonely before. He is at a boarding school with people he doesn’t know that well and no family. Holden struggles to find drive in his life. He got kicked out of school because he didn’t put in the effort. All of these things contribute to how Holden acts in many aspects of his life, including his life with women. The only girl Holden seems to actually care about is Jane. Other than that, it seems like Holden only cares about sex. Holden was very concerned and even said “He didn’t say one goddam word about Jane”(41). This shows how Holden cares about how Stradlater treated Jane on their date. Holden never shows that he cares that much for other women though. Holden has a special attachment to Jane, real or not. “I mean most girls are so dumb and all. After you neck them for a while, you can really watch them losing their brains”(chapter 13). Holden is very disrespectful when he talks about the women he has been with. He doesn’t treat them kindly and he talks down to them. Holden isn’t disrespectful to Jane, but he has lots of awful things to say about any other woman.

So far throughout these chapters we’ve learned more and more about Holden’s family and his childhood. After running away to New York, Holden felt more lonely in the bigger crowds and he doesn’t know what he truly wants. He wants attention and wants to not be lonely but he also belittles everybody and shuts them out. No one truly knows who he is, including himself. In my opinion, the way he acts towards men shows signs of sexual abuse in his childhood. He is intimitated by older men and might be attracted to them because of what happened when he was younger but he also talks to women and tries to hook up with them. I think he tries to talk to women because he doesn’t feel like it’s acceptable to admit that he may be into men. “Sex is something I don’t understand. I swear to God I don’t” (Salinger 62). This quote shows us that he doesn’t know what he wants at all. He’s trying to hook up with a woman but doesn’t really care about sex. This is another piece of evidence that he just simply wants attention so he isn’t lonely. “She knocked me out. I mean it. I was half in love with her by the time we sat down” (73). I think this quote shows that he’ll like anybody who gives him attention whether it’s good or bad. He’s friends with Stradlater because Stradlater talks to him and Holden tries to pick fights when he doesn’t talk to him as often and he says he’s falling in love with a girl he met minutes ago just because she danced with him. It makes me wonder if him and Jane were even close or if she talked to him once and he grew attached.

Holden Caulfield is a very interesting character. His interactions with people are strange. His obsession with Stradlater and Jane leads me to believe he is most likely bisexual. He describes Stradlater as a “sexy bastard” and he is very obsessive about how Stradlater looks and how many women he gets with. Stradlater’s interaction with women sickens Holden though. He implies that when he flashbacks to his date in Ed Banky’s car where Stradlater’s date is in the back “stop, don’t, please-don’t” and then there’s a silence he says he’s relieved, and it’s because he was so uncomfortable. Later in the book he states that “when you like a girl, you shouldn’t be crummy with her.” He treats more innocent women with respect rather than devious women. This is shown when he meets Sunny, the prostitute, he states “The trouble was, I just didn’t want to do it. I felt more depressed than sexy, if you want to know the truth. She was depressing. Her green dress hanging in the closet and all. And besides, I don’t think I could ever do it with somebody that sits in a stupid movie all day long. I really don’t think I could. “

Holden also has problems with the concept of sex. He always gets into situations where he can have sex, but as soon as it’s about to happen he always stops it. I think that stems from the sexual abuse that has happened to him so much. He tells us later in the book when he goes to his old teacher’s apartment to talk, the teacher is drunk but listens and eventually Holden gets tired and the teacher leads him to the couch allowing him to sleep and says he's going to keep drinking. Holden wakes up to the teacher petting his hair and he jumps up saying his father will be mad if he doesn’t get back home, his teacher follows him to the door and says “go get your bags and come back to bed handsome.” Holden says this has happened 20 times before and he doesn’t like it. His sexual abuse also plays a part in his fear of relationships. Anytime he gets to have a romantic relationship he freaks out. He needs companionship more than romantic relationships.

Childhood lays the building blocks of life. In J.D. In Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye, the main character Holden Caulfield travels through life confused and uncertain due to a mix of mental illness and a traumatic childhood. Due to these circumstances, Holden is only capable of loving innocent people. Holden experienced the life changing loss of his younger brother, Allie, to leukemia at only 13 years old. Holden only ever talks fondly of Allie and how he loves him. The other two people Holden loves are his little sister, Phoebe, and his childhood friend, Jane. Holden clings to their simple innocence in how they are not selfish sellouts like everyone else in Holden’s life. Whether it is his parents, older brother, or classmates, Holden intensely focuses on their lack of innocence and “phoniness.” For example Holden states the following about his other brother D.B.: “Now he’s out in Hollywood, D.B., being a prostitute” (Salinger 4). Holden later talks about his younger sister, Phoebe, saying: “You never saw a little kid so pretty and smart in your whole life” (87). Holden then goes on about how great his younger sister is while only bashing his older brother for being a phony. He hyper fixates on D.B.’s flaws while praising Phoebe for her innocence. Another example of Holden only loving innocence is his interaction with the blond dancer in the Lavender Room. Holden thinks the dancer is a moron yet said he feels “half in love with her” (95). Holden ends up giving her a kiss on top of her head to which she responds poorly. Holden then explains himself saying “I have a kid sister that’s only in the goddam fourth grade. You’re about as good as she is, and she can dance better than anybody living or dead” (94). Holden explains throughout the night how annoyed he is by the dancer’s stupidity yet still feels this affinity towards her due to how she reminds him of his younger sister whom he loves dearly. Holden half loves this dancer because he loves the half of her that reminds him of Phoebe. Holden’s confusion and uncertainty finds rest in the innocence of the world which he wants to protect. He feels innocence is the only part in the world worth living for that has not been tainted by phoniness.

Holden is more interested in sex than companionship, there are multiple instances throughout this book where he is so impulsive with his wording that drives us to think that he is more interested in sex. Through his word choices and the way he talks to us and how he says it. “ She was really good. All you had to do was touch her” (Salinger 95). This is showing us how he is impulsive with his words regarding the other gender. Where he says that all you have to do is touch her, where that is more about sexual contact rather than a relationship. “She had a lot of charm. She had quite a lot of sex appeal too, if you really want to know.” (73). Right here he comes and says about this older lady that she has sex appeal. He didn’t care about talking to her or trying to have a genuine conversation. He just looks for her for sex, and her sex appeal. This is why Holden is more interested in sex rather than having a companionship, or a relationship with someone.

Holden doesn't need sex or romance. What he truly needs is companionship. He is too emotionally unavailable for a relationship with him to be possible. In the end he just wants someone there with him. When he was involved with Jane he said,”I held hands with her all the time, for instance that doesn’t sound like much, I realize, but she was terrific to hold hands with.” In chapter 11. He didn’t think about this sexually like he does with everything else. He simply enjoys the company and touch. However, when he is presented with the opportunity to have sex, he backs out because it’s not the kind of touch that Holden wants or needs. He idolized sex as a way to be close to someone. But I think that is another reason why it scares him. Being vulnerable and allowing someone to care for him is something that he isn’t used to. He also tries to turn to sex because he is incredibly touch starved. “Sex is something I just don’t understand. I swear to god I don’t.” on page 63. This quote shows Holden’s true feelings on the subject of sex. He lets what he really thinks about it slip through and it confirms that as tough as Holden acts, he’s just very scared and confused.

Holden talks a lot about his past interaction with women and how close he has gotten to having sex with them. He says, “I mean–she keeps telling you to stop . The trouble with me is, I stop,”(Salinger 92). This proves he is interested in going further with women. When he talks about Stradlater, he never mentions having sex with him, only ever things he admires about him. Holden says in the beginning, “He was pretty handsome, too–I’ll admit it.”(27).

I believe Holden to be a straight man, while I can see why people would speculate that he is gay the book provides a lot more evidence that he is straight. Like in the Quote, “Women kill me. They really do. I don't mean I’m oversexed or anything like that - although I am quite sexy. I just like them, I mean” (Salinger, 70). This quote talks about how he likes women and I feel that women confuse him but he knows he likes them. Holden tends to be a mean and closed off dude with men. But when It comes to women he talks about them very sexually at times. Like in the quote, “I apologized like a madman, because the band was starting a fast one.She started jiterbugging with me - but just very nice and easy, not corny. She was really good. All you had to do was touch her. And when she turned around, her pretty little butt twitched so nice and all. She knocked me out. I mean it. I was half in love with her by the time we sat down. All of these are things that would not come out of A gay mans mouth about some random girl.

Holden is a complex character, from what I have read it is pretty obvious that he is an unreliable narrator. From the most recent chapters we can see Holden opens up about his sex life. He sounds pretty confident when talking about his sexual experiences but in reality he has no experience. “If you want to know the truth, im a virgin, I really am. I've had quite a few experiences to lose my virginity and all, but ive never got around to it yet.” (91) This shows that Holden is inexperienced, but the way that he was talking about his love life sounded like he was trying to hide this fact and even sounded judgemental to those who were inexperienced. I honestly believe that he is lying about doing those things with all of those girls, such as the girl he “horsed” around with from the cab. “I came quite close to doing it a couple times, though. One time in particular, I remember. Something went wrong, though – I don't even remember what any more.” (91). This quote clearly shows that Holden is dismissing the lack of his experience and even comes off as embarrassed to admit it. These chapters give us even more proof that Holden is an unreliable narrator and we can't believe everything that he says.

There are many times where he claims he is a sex maniac and wants to have sex but doesn’t know how to and never has. “I can even see how it might be quite a lot of fun, in a crumby way… the thing is, though, I don’t like the idea. It stinks if you analyze it.” Holden is constantly overthinking the idea of sex and is confused about his desires. This also proves his immaturity and how he is not mentally ready to lose his innocence, even if he claims he is. “I was half in love with her by the time we sat down, that’s the thing about most girls.” Holden clearly can’t really differentiate his feelings and how he feels towards women because how randomly just fall in love with someone over such a small act. “I kept laying there in the dark anyway, trying not to think about Jane and Stradlater in that goddamn banky's car. But it was impossible.” There are many times Holden shows jealousy towards stradlater and this is one of them.

Holden’s indifference to gender expression, fear of intimacy, and the way he obsesses over other peoples’ lives with no desire for it suggest the more modern definition of his aromanticism and asexuality. Despite the 1950s setting, Holden seems to hold little regard—other than his foreseen expletives—towards the unique appearance of a crossdresser in the hotel he stays at in chapter nine. Moving on just as quickly as he had noticed it, he regarded the heterosexual couple in another hotel room with greater disgust: “I saw a man and a woman squirting water out of their mouths at each other…I don’t like the idea. It stinks, if you analyze it. I think if you don’t really like a girl, you shouldn’t horse around with her at all, and if you do like her, then you’re supposed to like her face, you ought to be careful about doing crumby stuff to it, like squirting water all over it” (p. 62). Holden has an obvious sense of aesthetic appeal, but hardly any for romantic or sexual attraction.

Throughout the book, Holden has a strong obsession or fixation with his roommate Stradlater and his experience with women—more than women themselves. He’s disgusted by his treatment of Jane; he describes well enough to unsettle readers as if they were there in the car, revealing Stradlater’s perverted view of her: “he’d start snowing his date in this very quiet, sincere voice—like as if he wasn’t only a very handsome guy, but a nice, sincere guy, too. I damn near puked, listening to him…I don’t think he gave that girl the time that night—but damn near” (p. 49). Many boys at their age might congratulate Stradlater on his behavior, but not Holden.

I think that Holden Caulfield is probably somewhere on the asexuality spectrum. (and maybe aromantic but that’s not what we’re talking about here). He doesn’t seem to have very many positive feelings about sex in general, even though he talks about it an awful lot. He’s always able to find some sort of an excuse to explain why he’s still a virgin, but I think it kind of boils down to he just doesn’t really want that. In chapter 13 he says, “If you want to know the truth, I’m a virgin. I really am. I’ve had quite a few opportunities to lose my virginity and all, but I’ve never got around to it yet. Something always happens,” (92). He says that ‘something always happens’, but I think he is just trying to rationalize with himself what he actually feels. Being surrounded by so much sexuality all the time at Pencey, asexuality would probably be something he would struggle to understand, let alone accept that he identifies with the term. He also says he has had plenty of opportunities to lose his virginity, which could be another sign that something else is going on there. If it happens one time, sure, something comes up, but if every single time something is coming up, I think it’s gotta be something he’s doing, right? Also in chapter 13, “The thing is, most of the time when you’re coming pretty close to doing it with a girl, she keeps telling you to stop. The trouble with me is, I stop. Most guys don’t. I can’t help it. You never really know whether they want you to stop or whether they’re just scared as hell, or whether they’re just telling you to stop so that if you do go through with it, the blame’ll be on you, not them. Anyway, I keep stopping. The trouble is, I get to feeling sorry for them,”(92). That comes off, to me, as him trying again to shift the blame and make it look like it’s anyone else’s fault (the woman’s, again could be a different thing he’s got going on) but his own that it always ends up like that for him. He mentions that he can’t help it even when he knows anyone else would keep going, and I interpreted that as him noting that he’s different from his peers in that regard. Whether or not he's actually aware of the differences between them is something else, but I think that, in this instance, Salinger is making it kind of obvious how differently he approaches the topic of sex compared to the rest of the characters. However, asexuality is definitely a spectrum, and everyone experiences it differently, but based on his attitude and actions towards sex, I believe that he falls somewhere on it.

Throughout the book, the Catcher in the Rye, the reader is given hints and insights to Holden’s sexuality. The reader is first made aware when Holden says “...he thought he had a damn good build. He did, too. I have to admit” Chapter 3, pg 34. Besides how Holden is with Stradlater, he acts obsessive about Jane Gallagher. Soon after Stradlater says he’s going on a date with Jane he says “Where is she? I asked him. “I oughta go down and say hello to her. Where is she? In the Annex” Chapter 4, pg 40. Throughout the entire 4th chapter Holden keeps talking about her but never goes down to say hello. The reader is also given hints that Holden possibly has had bad experiences with sexual relationships in the past. The first one the reader is made aware of is in Chapter 7, pg 64. “...What a technique that guy had. What he’d do was, he’d start snowing his date in this very quite sincere voice⸺ like as if he wasn’t only a very handsome guy but a nice, sincere guy… His date kept saying “No⸺ please. Please, don’t. Please.” But old Stradlater kept snowing her in this Abraham Lincoln, sincere voice and finally there’d be this terrific silence in the back of the car.” From this quote it can be inferred that the girl Stradlater was talking to didn’t want any of his advancements and was begging him to stop and to leave her alone. Later in the book the reader is also told that Holden was either sexually assaulted or groomed by his old teacher. Mr. Antolini was Holden’s teacher while he still went to Pency. During the entire Chapter 24, Mr.Antolini was being creepy and was ‘flirting’ with Holden despite being a minor (16 years old). Chapter 24, pg 248 “All right. Good night, handsome”. Chapter 24, pg 249 “Then something happened. I don’t even like to talk about it…I felt something on my head, some guy’s hand. Boy, it really scared hell out of me. What it was, it was Mr. Antolini’s hand. What he was doing was, he was sitting on the floor right next to the couch, in the dark and all, and he was sort of petting me or patting my goddam head”. Chapter 24, pg 249 “Nothing! I’m simply sitting here, admiring”. Chapter 24, pg 250, “Don’t be ridiculous, Holden. Get back in that bed. I’m going to bed myself…”. Chapter 24, pg 251, “You grab your bags and scoot right on back here again. I’ll leave the door unlatched”. Finally, Chapter 24, pg 251, “Boy, I was shaking like a madman. I was sweating too. When something perverty like that happens, I start sweating like a bastard. That kind of stuff’s happened to me about twenty times since I was a kid, I can’t stand it.”

I believe Holden is a type of asexual. Asexuality is the umbrella term for people who experience little to no sexual attraction. To dive deeper, I believe Holden is myrsexual, nebulasexual, and caedosexual. Myrsexual is a part of the asexuality spectrum, it’s when someone identifies with multiple different ace-spec identities. Nebulasexual is when someone cannot tell if they’re experiencing sexual attraction or not due to some type of neurodivergence or intrusive thoughts/urges/images. Caedosexual is when someone may have felt sexual attraction at one point but those feelings were “taken away” due to trauma.

Holden’s sexuality in The Catcher in the Rye reflects a typical teenage fascination with women, but his first person narrative style causes the reader to think this sense of hypersexuality and deeper issues. Like many teenage boys, Holden is drawn to girls, particularly Jane Gallagher, whom he idealizes. He fixates on certain things about people, “I mean when she was talking and she got excited about something, her mouth sort of went in about fifty directions, her lips and all. That killed me,” (Salinger 77). He is talking about watching her lips move when she talks and how it makes him obsessed in a way. However, his internal thoughts can come across as obsessive, making his interest in women seem exaggerated. “I remember this one afternoon. It was the only time old Jane and I ever got close to necking,” (78). What teenage boy doesn’t want to kiss the girl he likes? In the context of his conflicts, Holden’s reflections can feel exaggerated, as if he is yearning for more-- but he is just a teenage boy who is conflicted with growing up, sexuality, and girls.
