If you manage to adopt a stable freefall position with maximum drag, you reach maximum terminal velocity of about 120mph after falling 1500ft. On almost all landing surfaces, the deceleration when you hit the ground will be fast enough to kill you.

So if you get any chance to grab hold of anything which might cause more air drag, do it!

Then hope that you’re going to land on trees on top of deep snow on top of soft ground with no rocks, and on a steep slope where the angle of impact will be far from 90 degrees and you’ll have the possibility of losing energy slowly through sliding.

The good news, such as it is, is that between 1500ft and 30000ft any extra altitude doesn’t make much difference. Above 30000ft or so it gets a good deal worse, because you’re likely to lose consciousness and tumble in an uncontrolled way. I read of an experimental high-altitude freefall from 80000ft where the jumper went into a flat spin at 120rpm causing 22G forces at the hands and feet.
