         <description><![CDATA[<div>Professor Ediriweera Sarachchcandra was an unparalleled artist born in Sri Lanka. He was a great play writer, novelist, poet, literary critic, essayist, and social commentator. He researched literary theory and criticism. He <mark>starts (started) </mark>his career as a teacher in St. Peter's College, Colombo 04. He was a Lecturer at the University of Peradeniya <mark>and acted as the </mark>Sri Lankan Ambassador to France <mark>from </mark>1974 – 1977.<br><br></div><div>Veditantirige Ediriweera Ranjitha Sarachchandra was born <mark>in (on)</mark> 3<sup>rd</sup> June 1914 in Rathgama, Galle. He is the first child of his family and has two younger sisters. His father was Charles Francis de Silva, a postmaster, and his mother was Lydia Pinto Moragoda, a school teacher. His nationality is Sri Lankan. He attended <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Aloysius%27_College,_Galle">St. Aloysius College</a>, <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richmond_College_(Sri_Lanka)">Richmond College, </a><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._John%27s_College_Panadura">St. John's College</a>, and <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S._Thomas%27_College,_Mount_Lavinia">St. Thomas College</a>. In 1939 he married Aileen Beleth, and in 1965, he married Lalitha Swarna Perera. He was a father of five children.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>His first drama, Maname, was produced in 1956, and Sinhabahu in 1961 is widely considered his best dramas. Malagiya Eththo, Malwunge Awrudhuda are some famous novels written by him. He was awarded Honorary Doctor of Literature from the University of Jaffna, Honorary Doctor of Literature from the University of Peradeniya, and Emeritus Professor. Sarachchandra passed away on 16<sup>th</sup> August 1996 at the age of 82.</div>]]></description>
