For a designer your day might consist of meeting with the technical director or producer to make sure everybody is on the correct track and ready to meet deadlines. Meeting with the technicians to make sure your design is being executed properly. Doing research of certain time periods or reading through the hired dramaturgy’s research. Your day could also be filled with sitting at a desk for hours designing or making models or your already designed work. Each day is different based off of which stage of designing you are in.
For producers your day is filled with meeting with directors, finances, designers and technicians. Everyday the job consists of making sure people are meeting their deadlines and the directors vision is being followed and designers are cohesive in their vision. The day also consists of making sure budgets are being followed and figuring out how to navigate hiccups and bumps in the road on the way to the finished product.
Producers and designers need to be able to work well with people, manage time well, and be organized. Producers need to be more financially aware and conscientious than designers and be able to figure out how a designers vision can be done in a time and costly manner. There are many potential paths for those who study technical design. There are three major options and then many sub genres within those three major choices, Film, television and live theatre. Where organization is the main aspect of the production side of theatre, creativity and the ability to see beyond the words written in a script is the most important aspect of technical design. Being consistent and reliable is one of the most important aspects of being in this field.
