This was Edmund's official ship he was on in the attacks. He first got on the ship in the Brooklyn Navy Yard on September 1st 1939. At first, he was assigned to the officers' motor boat for a few months then to the main diesel generators. After 6 months, he was advanced to machinist mate 1st class, but still in the diesel room. Then, they started on their shakedown cruise in December 1939. They also spent the holidays in Annapolis, and then headed to South America.

He was assigned to the USS Mississippi in San Pedro, in the "M" division which is working on the main engines. Then soon after, he was advanced to fireman 1st class and then machinist mate 2nd class. During the holidays, the USS Mississippi traveled to the Hawaiian Islands to visit an extinct volcano, and 50 miles away from the equator. In May 1939, his hitch in the Navy was up so he transferred off the USS Mississippi in Norfolk and got paid off in Boston, Massachusetts.

The Battle of Kula Gulf ( USS Helena )

Around midnight on July 4th, the Helena and other ships moved to the Kula Gulf. A big disadvantage was that they were using gunpowder that was not flashless. That means that they were totally illuminated to the enemy and presented them with an easy target each time they fired their missils and guns. After 7 minutes of rapid fire, the guns shot more than or around a thousand rounds, they sank 2 ships. About a minute later, they were hit mid-ship by a 2nd torpedo and it knocked out all of their lights and steam, mostly in the engine room.

There was no life jackets left. Edmund and his friend, George Schoolman, held hands and jumped over the last of the ships deck together. They split when the hit the water but managed to get into the same raft as eachother. They eventually had to abandon the raft because the brass 6-inch powder cases began to fall off the ship and onto their raft.
