In early adolescents, students are learning to see something through one lens and then if they disengage they can then learn to see it from another way.

1. See: First, students see through the images and teacher model of the problems
2. Do: Then, students participate in practice problems and allow them to see the problem from different perspectives
3.Teach: Finally, Then the students will be ready to teach and that is where the learning solidifies and students are able to take ownership of their learning.

Example: Students making video lessons on a specific topic, parallel and perpendicular. Then the students have an opportunity to see 15 different lessons on a given topic. Students have a chance to see the perspective of the teacher first and then from the perspective of the other students and it is broadening their understanding and learning.

Mindfulness is not a form of discipline, it is a tool.

Yoga Circle
Students sat in a circle while the teacher hit a chime. The students were quite and then she prompted them through deep breathing. The goal is to bring a level of self regulation and their ability to control their feelings. Introduce a yoga circle into the classroom.

Reading and Writing
Students not being able to focus long enough to complete tasks and then they are feeling frustrated

We need to provide tools to help them maintain atteniton and focus.

Happiness and well-being are actual skills that individuals need to be taught the same way they would learn any other type of skill.

Meditiations
Best to be taught over several very short practices throughtout the school day.

Mindful listening
Sitting silently for one minute to allow students to listen to all of the sounds that they obsevre during that minute

What it looks like
-students seated around the room
-timer set (1 minute)
-students looking around
-students might wiggle
-students got an opportunity to share one thing that they heard
-could be focsuing on stillness
-could be focusing on their breath

Success Criteria
-students are happier
-students are calmer
-students seems more comfortable in their body
-less reactive
-the way they treat each other
-the way they manage their experience

Types of Mindfulness
-mindful listening: students explore the noises around them
-mindful eating: students explored a raisin and explored what it looked like, smelled like, sounded like while gentle squishing it, placed it on their tongue to feel it, then very slowly started to chew it and feel it
-mindful movement: students held arms out in-front of them and tried to hold them very still. Then students closed eyes to determine if they could still feel their hands. Then students were lead to a series of movements.

Tools to increase mindfulness:
Mindful Spine: Activity worked on everyday. Helps build students to build their awareness to have that tall posture.
The bell: Never use the bell to get students quite. It is to draw their attention to something that is important. Something that is going to signal their brains to the fact that it is time to learn.
Heartfulness- Building in opportunities to grow compassion in students. When students aren't their because they are sick, the class sends positive thoughts to them. "May you be happy, may you be healthy, may you be peaceful".
