As a current school counselor intern, a large portion of my job responsibility includes finalizing referrals for Special Education. After a student has gone through the Response to Intervention process and continues to struggle academically, behaviorally, or socially, it is recommended they be testing for Special Education in order to receive additional services and/or accommodations to individualize the learning process and create a more successful learning environment. I chose this topic to gain a better understanding of the Special Education identification process and to ensure proper training for all stakeholders.

Students receiving Special Education services allows for students to receive an instruction that is appropriate for their ability. Special Education services are unique to each child including, but not limited to: modified or reduced assignments, oral administration on tests and assignments, small group instruction from a Resource teacher, visual or hearing aids, etc. Students that qualify for Special Education services receive an individualized learning plan through the ARD (Admission, Review and Dismissal) process. All students, regardless of race, ability, gender, demographics, or economic background deserve a fair, equitable education. An area emerging in Special Education is the rising need for LEP (Limited English Proficiency) students to receive Special Education services. Many districts are not equipped or staffed to provide Special Education resources in the LEP student's native language. Unfortunately, Special Education LEP students often do not receive an equitable education.
