At first, librarians were the keeper of the books. They kept order and silence in the libraries, and assisted patrons in looking for texts. As years went on, libraries adapted to places where people could come get help researching and finding answers to their questions. People could go for reference and information. As the years went on, the role of the LMS adapted to fit the changing world. With the evolution of computers and the Internet, less people were going for answers to their questions and instead needed help coming up with questions. Students especially needed to be taught how to navigate different online sources, search for texts, evaluate reputable and reliable sources and bias, etc.

Now, the LMS roles can vary by school and level. The LMS should be a well known member of the school building. An elementary LMS will have different roles and responsibilities than a high school LMS. Both are still responsible for the resources and texts housed within their space, and both will still be responsible for teaching or assisting in research with students. In my schools, the LMS is in charge of setting up and training teachers for state and district testing. They help distribute technology and computers. Many LMS are involved in assisting in professional development days, school newsletters, assisting parents in accessing the Parent Portal, and various other building jobs. The roles are constantly shifting in this time of information and technology. Our LMS help classes film with green screens, set up book reviews for students, assist with Google Classroom, send information on educational video accounts.

How are library media specialists perceived by themselves and their fellow colleagues, principals, students and others in their community?LMS roles are sometimes not clearly defined to others, such as their principals. People who teach subject areas such as math, science, or tech ed, might feel like they have no reason to work with their LMS due to their own content not being literary focused. However, with the shift to CCSS, all areas are responsible for teaching literacy skills.I believe the most important quality a LMS needs is approach-ability. They need to be both approachable for others to come to them, but they also need to be comfortable approaching their colleagues. I think students who are readers are the ones most likely to engage with the LMS and go to them for suggestions and help when selecting a book. Certain kids our LMS knows because they spend a lot of time in the media center. I think a lot of teachers are still unsure of how they can utilize their LMS to help them in their particular subject area. This is when open communication and collaboration needs to happen.

Based on your experience, how do you perceive the librarian in your school? How have you worked with your school's librarian?By working in two middle schools currently, I have the advantage of having two great library media specialists (both graduates of the ACES program). I don’t perceive them as a valuable resource, i KNOW they are. I think in one of my schools, staff are more open to reaching out to her and going to her for support. She is a very creative and involved person in our school. She is always willing to teach a class, design a lesson or project, and give ideas and suggestions for various units. Last year, we collaborated with her to do a mock trial for our 8th graders on The Outsiders. We also had her do an introduction to Shakespeare and London as she had studied over there for a semester. She was able to share her personal experiences and pictures with our students. She designed a sci fi lesson for us to use during our dystopian unit. She read Sound of Thunder with students and then showed them an episode based on the story. Lastly, she asked if she could do a lesson for comic book week, in which she introduced students to nonfiction texts about historical events- written in graphic novels. It was a fun way to end the school year! I have been fortunate in all of my schools throughout the years (except for one), to have been able to work closely with the media specialists and have felt that they were valuable resources for me. It definitely helps being a Language Arts teacher as it tends to lend itself more naturally than some other subjects.

Notable Quotes: Rapid advances in technology have increased the confusion over the library media specialist’s role. One professional has stated that “working with young people in library media centers in times of tremendous social, educational, and technological change is like attempting to maintain balance while running across a series of tightropes in the midst of a tornado”
