The boycott lasted for 381 days and was sparked by the arrest of Rosa Parks for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a city bus. The Montgomery Improvement Association (MIA) decided to organize this boycott and put pressure on the system to acknowledge the issue of segregation on buses. This led to a Supreme Court ruling that segregation on public transit was unconstitutional. Eventually, the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee (AWOC) decided to strike multiple different grape vineyards and saw the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), led by Cesar Chavez join them on their strike. This depleted a large part of the working force and put pressure on the farm owners to treat the farmworkers better and provide the proper basic accommodations. To continue the pressure, the organizations urged people to boycott buying produce from these growers. The passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 gave workers a step in the door to advocate for equality on the basis of economics. The tactics seen here are very similar to the earlier bus boycotts of Montgomery. This murder spurred the discussion of brutality to people of color committed by the police and others who were racially motivated. Protests started to bring attention to the problem that was occurring so commonly. The movement grew larger after the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York City. Most recently we have seen a large presence in the movement after the murder of George Floyd. These events have flooded the media and started major movement towards more discussion about legislation to prevent the deaths. It has created focus on racial justice and police reform. These protests have stemmed from the long history of civil rights movements that have happened over the years.
