Parks' childhood brought her early experiences with racial discrimination and activism for racial equality. In one experience, Parks' grandfather stood in front of their house with a shotgun while Ku Klux Klan members marched down the street.

The Ku Klux Klan (as many other organisations) has its own secret vocabulary to recognise each others. If a KKK member asked «AYAK» (Are you a Klansman?), the affirmative answer should be «AKIA» (A Klansman I am).​


Along their history, they have created a vocabulary whose words do all start with the preffix "KL" as:

  • Klabee: treasurers
  • Kleagle: recruiter
  • Klecktoken: starting fee
  • Kligrapp: secretary
  • Klonvocation: meeting
  • Kloran: rituals book
  • Kloreroe: delegate
  • Kludd: priest
     
Since 1916, the KKK had used some terms to rank their members like Wizard, for the leader, or Night Hawk for a security member.

After a period of decline, white Protestant nativist groups revived the Klan in the early 20th century, burning crosses and staging rallies, parades and marches denouncing immigrants, Catholics, Jews, African Americans and organized labor. Throughout the 17th century, European settlers in North America used to enslaved Africans as a cheaper and more plentiful labor source than poor Europeans.

Some historians have estimated that 6 to 7 million enslaved people were imported to the New World during the 18th century alone, depriving the African continent of some of its healthiest and ablest men and women.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, enslaved Africans worked mainly on the tobacco, rice and indigo plantations of the southern coast, from Maryland and Virginia to Georgia.

After the American Revolution, many colonists began to link the oppression of enslaved Africans to their own oppression by the British, and to call for slavery’s abolition.

It also revived interest in the KKK, so many little groups were created un differents areas. Many more followed. Some of these groups focused on supporting the U.S. effort in World War I, but most of the groups were realted to secrecy, racism, and violence.

As the Klan grew, it attracted the attention of the young Bureau, created a few years earlier. They had few federal laws to combat the KKK in these formative days. Cross burnings and lynchings, for example, were local issues. But under its general domestic security responsibilities, the Bureau was able to start gathering information and intelligence on the Klan and its activities. On the evening of the first of December in 1955, Parks, an African American, chose to take a seat on the bus on her ride home from work. She was arrested for disobeying an Alabama law requiring black people to relinquish seats to white people when the bus was full. Her arrest sparked a 381-day boycott of the Montgomery bus system. It also led to a 1956 Supreme Court decision banning segregation on public transportation.
