Students will work in groups of 3-4 and pick a topic below they would like to focus on as their primary project. Once they have chosen a category they will be required to implement this into their community. Examples may be: Organizing a hike for community members, a senior living center or a youth group. They can hold a local craft fair at their city recreational center or set up a recycling program in their local school.
Any funding needed will require fund-raising from students, i.e. car wash, bake sale. All proceeds from their projects are to be donated to a local cause, i.e. their recreational centers, a local charity etc.
This activity will not only help students expand their knowledge about their health and environment, it will also help them engage and give back to their communities. Students will need to provide a report on what they learned about the topic (at least 3 resources) and create a PowerPoint (10 slides) to present their project to the class.

Student will be split into six different groups. Each group will be in charge of learning as much as they can about their assigned ingredient from the model cigarette. They can use previous lessons, the internet, etc. to find the information they need. Once they have completed gathering as much information as possible, one member from each group (1-6) will come together to form a new group. This new group should include at least one member from each of the previous six groups. The students will then take time to teach one another about their specific ingredient, and how it will affect their bodies.
Image: https://www.stonyfield.com/blog/lets-celebrate-earth-day-every-day?utm_source=pinterest&utm_medium=paid_social&utm_campaign=04182018_EarthDay

Constructivism is a learning theory based on observations and hands on study. As individuals we construct our own understanding and knowledge of the world based off our personal experiences and reflection. Each time we learn something new we have to reconcile it with previous ideas/experience. It may change what we currently understand or believe or possibly even replace it. We have the choice to disregard the new information or keep it. We can become a constructivist by asking questions, exploring and assessing what we know. Health is an amazing subject, where students will already come to class with their interpretation of "good" vs "bad" health is. As a class we can come up with a definition based on experiences and continued research of the topic.
https://www.thirteen.org/edonline/concept2class/constructivism/index.html

Project Based Learning: Germs!

During our unit on germs. I will work with our Science department to acquire some petri dishes. Students will be placed into groups of 3 or 4 and have the autonomy to choose a "germy" object they would like to swab. We will keep the dishes in our class and the groups will be required to document what they observe during the coming week, recording their observations. Students will present their findings to the class. Prior to this activity, we will have covered some of the "germiest" places. This experience will allow them to see how germs can travel, what materials they stick better too and how cleaning products may effect their results.

I think the idea below is a great way to have students become involved in solving a heath problem and working together to share their knowledge. The source for this idea can be found at: https://padlet.com/karlyoneita/get4c1lzclt6
Students could engage in problem-based learning by being provided with a scenario of a neighborhood picnic where a food bourne illness breaks out and some of the patrons get sick and even die. The student's job is to find out what food caused the outbreak and also what bacteria caused the outbreak. Students will use contextual clues to brainstorm, analyze, reason, and synthesize the information they've been given to come to the conclusion of their picnic epidemic.

A well directed class discussion can really get the class to not only think deep but learn from other studetns experiences. This can also help them make stronger connections to their peers. A great discussion can be held when we are covering our unit on bullying. After a day of learning about the types of bullying and giving the students a chance to reflect on their own experiences with bullying we will arrange the desks into a big circle, a "camp fire" if you will. The teacher will be holding a giant ball of yarn. There are multiple questions that could be asked to students to get them talking and thinking. "What can you do to stop the culture of bullying?", "What is the difference between teasing and bullying? How can you tell a difference?" As the students answer these questions the ball of yarn will be tossed around the classroom. By the end of the discussion, students will be able to see a visual representation of how their personal thoughts can connect to those around them. More journal prompts can be found at: https://www.journalbuddies.com/

Authentic Activities

While I think a lot of the previous activities really get the students involved to connect with their world. Another way for them to connect and to become stronger figures for the world is through managing their stress. For this activity in Health, students will be required to think of what their stressors and eustressors are in life They can bring an example or a picture of things that stress them. They will be put into groups with similar stressors. Examples may include: homework/school, relationships, or money. As a group they will research different types of stress reducing activities they can do when they are feeling their stressors. They will be required to use the technique they feel is most beneficial to them. They can present these ideas to the class. The reason I like this idea is students will not only learn one type of stress reducer but many. They will learn from one another. The teacher is simply there to help guide them to information or answer questions.
Image: https://meditateandwonder.com/blog/what-is-mindfulness-why-should-we-practice-it-printable-mindfulness-worksheets
