Abrasions

Abrasions happen when the skin is scraped and the top layer of the skin wears away. There is also an increased risk of infection. The initial care includes cleaning the skin with an antiseptic cream or jelly, then covering it with gauze and a bandage. Post-care includes cleaning the wound daily and covering it with a thin layer of petroleum jelly.

Lacerations

A deep cut or tear in the skin and flesh. The initial care for a laceration includes cleaning it thoroughly and covering it with a thin layer of gauze. Post-care includes cleaning the wound area daily with soap and water and applying a sterile bandage.
