I ran away during the night, towards the north, to get freedom. Running through the forest was difficult, but the moss growing on trees helped me, because it showed me the north.
I finally reach the Ohio River, after several days, and decided to cross it. I then ran and arrived to Canada, after a long time.

Many slaves try to run away from plantations. What I found that was interesting, is that the slaves know how to find the North Star and find their direction with the moss on trees. It really shocking because the slaves don't have educations and they still somehow learned these orientation methods!

What I found surprising about gaining freedom for a slave, is that they tough Canada as the last gate to heaven, maybe because Canada was another country, so the slave states cannot take them back into slavery. What really shocked me, was that slaves rather die of cold than be back into slavery, which makes sense but they might have a chance to survive in other free states.

After when the slaves got out of the slave states, they were free in the free states, but that didn't last forever until, in 1850, the Fugitive Slave Act ended that freedom in the North. This act wanted citizens to return any slaves that try to run away and send it back to its owner. If they were caught helping runaways, they will be fined 1000$ or go to prison for six months. This Fugitive Slave Act was imposed in slave states and also in free states.
