I grew up in the country on a farm where I helped in the garden and cared for the animals. During my youth, I was in 4-H, band, and chorus. In high school, I developed a love of history and enjoyed visiting museums. I also developed an interest in visiting far away places and learning about other people and cultures. I loved to read but math was not my strong subject. My school was very small and I graduated in a class of 30. My parents expected me to go to college and were very supportive. My immediate family, currently, includes my daughter, son, their spouses, and two energetic grandchildren.

I studied Elementary Education because I loved working with children and helping them reach their potential. Upon graduation, I was able to acquire a job in my home town. It was a little surreal since I was teaching with my former teachers. They were all totally supportive and helpful. It was fun going back to my roots and helping in my home community.

STEM Masters at Bradley

After years away from the profession, I decided to return and realized that my skills needed to be brought up to the expectations for today's educators. I returned to Bradley to get my STEM Masters since I had found that I really enjoyed science and find that it is a way to connect to all students. Science excites students and gets them involved. When they are engaged, they want to read and learn!

Why stop after one masters? I went back to school a few years ago and finished a Masters as a Reading Specialist last summer. I also completed an ESL Endorsement in December. I will use both of these degrees to help my students in Reading as well as I found lots of ways to help my ESL students. I love working in my "rainbow" class where we always know that the color of our skin is not what is important. It is our character and efforts that we make to become better students!! I loved featuring different cultural celebrations in my classroom just before Winter Break.

Currently, I am teaching first grade at Northmoor Primary. My students are awesome and we work hard to learn reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. I try to make my curriculum as cross-curricular as possible so that students can see the connections between the subjects and the need in real world situations to integrate their knowledge. I like to have them work independently, in partnerships, and in small groups as well as in large groups. This is what they will have to do when they grow up.
