Additional Needs Lecturers
Internationals
I liked these addresses as they brought a new perspective to the Wananga and brought some critical issues to fore regarding our understanding of international students and those in need. The one on support was especially insightful as we saw different types of issues that students face and how we can handle these from a tutor's perspective.
I also found that the Support staff was speaking from a position of weakness and its my personal opinion that his address was more a plea rather than a way ahead.

Alroy Walker
He described his journey as a Maori and how is found himself and his roots. Alroy is a very interesting speaker and I liked a few things he spoke about and related to. The first was the incident where he spoke about his son and how he convinced his son to emulate a Maori warrior and it ended up shaming his son. This touched a nerve. It was a classical case where he missed the context and the environment. Very brave to share this with the cohort.
I loved the exercise he added to the activity mix of remembering Names. The video attached illustrates this well.

As part of the learning and handling mature students I specially took a use case of Grame Cook, a nature student who is 55 years old, has a broken past, a broken family and is trying to reskill himself.
I have taught him two modules and his dedication to his work and his study is indeed worth emulating.
I decided to know him a bit more and then recommend him for an Adult Educator award. I felt nice when his parents, both over 80 came and we had a 20 minutes discussion on Grame. It was a surreal moment. The 80 years old parents were discussing their ward who was 55 years old and it was VERY similar to the discussions we have for our 18 years old.
The best Pick of the Year for me was the one here. To me this is the great example of handling age diversity.
