- Curley makes Lennie the object of his anger and aggression. Lennie is picked on by Curley, the boss's son, because of his size and power.

- Lennie is able to connect with Crooks because of his innocence and seriousness, which helps to bridge the racial barrier on the ranch. Being around Lennie makes Crooks feel less alone and encourages him to express his emotions.
