A particular Algebra text has a total of 1382 pages which is broken into two parts. The second part of the book has 64 more pages then the first part. How many pages are in each part of the book?

Part 1 = x
Part 2 = y

X + Y = 1382
Y = X + 64

X + (X + 64) = 1382
2X + 64 = 1382
2X = 1382 - 64
2X =1318
X = 659

Y = 659 + 64
Y =723

CHECK: 723 - 64 =659
659 + 723 = 1382

Part 1 of the book has 659 pages, while Part 2 of the book has 723 pages.

So what we did was combined line terms 11x +48=180. Then we subtracted 48 from both sides. 11x=180-48

Question: Two angles are complementary. The larger angle is 3 degrees less than twice the measure of the smaller angle. Find the measure of each angle.

Complementary angles = 90 degrees
Larger angle(x): x= 2y-3
Smaller angle(y): y=90

2y+y-3=90        
3y-3=90
3y=93
y=31

x=2(31)-3
x=62-3
x=59

Checking our equation:
We add y and x, they should equal 90.
x+y=90
59+31=90
Therefore our answer is correct.

  Another way to check our answer is by substituting.
x= 2y-3
59=2(31) -3
59= 62-3
59=59 true
The measurement of the 
larger angle is 59 degrees and the measurement of the smaller angle is 31 degrees.
