Mia Couto is a writer from Mozambique. Around the time that this story was written, there was elections happening in Mozambique. This could lead us to believe that the clowns in the story symbolized politicians. 

2.) We believe that the clowns resemble the politicians while the people represent the media and humanity as a whole. The war shows a trend through history of elections and the conflicts that come from it. 

3.) When the italics are shown, it is showing the peoples perspectives on this "war". There was a civil war in Mozambique in 1994, the time of this story, as portrayed throughout the reading. 

2) Couto says, "together they crossed the city destroyed, careful not to tread on the cadaver." When Couto talks about how the viewers didn't seem to fret about a little blood  and didn't seem to care about the violence. This means that the spectators were numb to this violence and had seen a lot.

3) In nearly every sentence, he uses words most people don't use. He states the theme of one specific argument. 2. He used very formal English and was blunt when it came to talking about the murders. "Dead bodies began to accumulate in the streets." "... One of the clowns armed himself with a stick. Advancing on his adversary, he discharged a blow that tore off his wig. The other, furious, equipped himself with a symmetrical beating bat and responded with the same dismeasure."
3. He doesn't use quotes, instead, he uses italics and dashes. The way he writes is very confusing and hard to follow at times. We found it interesting how the narrator seemed to have a soul and responded to the people talking with the narration. 2)Couto depicts war as unplanned because, throughout the story, the citizens did not know what was going on around the city until everyone had died. There was destruction around the city, and he refers to politicians as the clowns in the story because they were taking money from the citizens and causing destruction and death.
3)the font of the dad and son talking about things following the story of the child being scared stands out to me. Some of the tones in the story also stand out to me. He is from Beira, Mozambique and this clown story was first written in portuguese. They just got done having a many year long Civil War that ended in 1992 and then in 1994, they had their first ever general election. 

2) He uses the language to describe the war that was going on. The clowns represented the two different sides of the war. "It's not serious don't fret" this was parents telling their  children to try and block out the war that was going on. 

3) The first few words are double spaced and in a different font. When the people speak in dialogue he italicizes the text. The last sentence uses very strong language, especially when it says "they crossed the city destroyed, careful not to tread on the cadavers."
