Phonics is a method of teaching reading and writing; it is about relating syllables to sounds. It teaches children how to identify and distinguish sounds that comprise words. Phonics are the building blocks of speaking, listening, and reading. "To sound out" words requires an understanding of phonics.

Phonics can be used so that students can read the texts and case studies in class. Lots of scientific terms are heavily based off Latin and Greek roots, and learning the phonics of this would help with remembering scientific names and long words. For example, with pronouncing words like mitochondria.

Class Example:

Phonics helps with words like "transpiration" - "trans" means across and "spirare" means to breathe. Transpiration is when plants release water vapor.

Hello Students! Phonics instruction is here to help students in decoding scientific vocabulary, so that every student can read scientific studies in class. Scientific knowledge is full of fun and activities, but there's also a lot of reading and writing. With phonics, the reading and writing will be easier for everyone. If any needs help with phonics, I am always available.

Scientific literature usually requires a certain level of fluency, and academic reading tends to have its own requirements for literacy. It is why there are medical literacy requirements for certain jobs; being conversationally fluent would not suffice. In the classroom, students will learn over the year how to be fluent in the specific discipline and the terminology and phrasing used.

Class Example: One form of fluency is being versed in scientific language. When doing the water cycle module, words like run-off must be understood and used correctly within a scientific context. Another form of fluency is reading data. If we are to do a case study on phosphorus levels in lakes over the past 20 years, students will have to be able to read the graph and interpret the results.

Fluency is one thing, but scientific fluency is another level. This is a good skill to understand reports, papers, and data! Understanding what is here allows us to think beyond the stars. Fluency is more than just knowing words on paper, its about knowing what the colors, shapes, and even smells mean. Fluency allows everyone to access the depth of scientific knowledge. It is for everyone, and if anyone needs help, we are here.
