The North was  urban, and offered lots of jobs and opportunities. A lot of people who came to the cities were immigrants. They came to America to find a job in the manufacturing industry. 
The South was  rural, with big farms called "plantations". The main industry was agriculture. The plantations needed a large and cheap workforce to produce enormous amounts of cotton, tobacco and other crops. In the south the main source of labor was slavery. Less people lived in the south and as a consequence there was a smaller workforce available than in the north. The plantation owners said that slavery was the only way they could work their farms. The southern states thought that the federal government had no right to tell them that slavery was illegal, because slaves were considered as property, not people, and the Constitution guaranteed the right for all men to own property. Northerners thought that slavery was immoral, and that it had no place in a free society. This fundamental disagreement over slavery finally led to the Civil War.

The rich plantation bosses wanted to maximize the profit they made on growing cotton. The cost of slave labour was very low so plantation owners had black people come from Africa to the Americas to work on the plantations. Slaves were bought at auctions and then began a life of hard work, usually in terrible conditions. The work was difficult and exhausting, and frequently in hot and miserable surroundings. Slaves were often given little food, insufficient clothing, and not enough sleep. Slaves could be beaten by their owners for no reason, and families could be separated and sold to different owners, never to see or hear from each other again. It was illegal for slaves to learn how to read or write. Slaves were denied basic rights, and slave owners justified this treatment as "the South's peculiar institution".

The argument between the North and the South over slavery, was strongly debated. New states were being created in the west and the problem was to know if slavery would be legal or not in these new states. Both sides wanted the new states to follow their lead to gain power within the government. The North wanted more free states and the South wanted more slave states. The election of Abraham Lincoln, (who was anti-slavery) as president was the breaking point for the pro-slavery southern states. Lincoln was elected on November 6, 1860. By March 1861, 7 southern states had seceded from the Union. The seven states formed a new country, called "the Confederate States of America". By July the country was at war with itself.

This document freed all slaves in the confederate states. As the Union and Confederacy were at war, this was a symbolic gesture for the black Americans in the South but the Confederacy refused to put it in action. In 1865, the 13th amendment to the Constitution finally freed all slaves in the USA.

The Confederate army fired cannons on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina, which was controlled by the Union army. The battle ended on April 14th with the Union army surrendering to the Confederates. The two armies were forming rapidly.
 The North had a distinct advantage in creating an army because 2/3 of the country's population lived in the northern states. The Union army also had better access to factories and supplies. However, the Confederates were fighting to defend their way of life, in their home states, in familiar territory. They did not have to travel as far as the Union army or move supplies over long distances. The Confederates also had strong beliefs about the role of the federal government and what rights state should have : they were fighting for an ideal.

General Grant (Union general) sent a letter on April 7th to General Lee (Confederate general) asking him to capitulate. With the South in ruins and many cities burned to the ground, Lee met with Grant in Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, to sign a surrender document prepared by Grant. The terms of surrender allowed the Confederate soldiers to keep their horses, arms, and personal possessions. The soldiers were allowed to make their way home without opposition from the Union army.

People who had had an important position in the Confederacy were not allowed to hold public office, and some  were never allowed the right to vote again. Freed slaves, called freed men, were allowed to vote and hold government positions. Northerners who came to the South to start businesses or take over existing jobs were called "carpetbaggers". Some Southerners hated these people, and created terrorist groups, such as the Ku Klux Klan, to attack carpetbaggers and those who were associated with them, as well as black people. The KKK intimidated and killed black people and any white people that helped and supported black people.

It was a massive fight that lasted for three days, resulting in many victims for both sides. It always looked as if the Confederate army was going to win, but then more Union troops arrived and the tide would turn again. After one final, disastrous attack on July 3, the Confederates conceded defeat.The Confederate troops suffered 28,000 casualties during the three day battle, while the Union army sustained 25,000 casualties. Gettysburg was the  turning point battle of the Civil War, marking the farthest north the confederate army would ever reach.
