week 2, Hadith Jibril

The Hadith of Jibril is one of the most important and comprehensive hadiths in Islam. It is narrated in Sahih Muslim and other collections, detailing an incident where the Angel Jibril (Gabriel) visits the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in human form to teach essential aspects of the religion. Below is a summary of the key points:

The Context:

The event takes place in the presence of the Prophet's companions. Jibril appears as a man with extremely white clothes and jet-black hair, showing no signs of travel, which astonished the companions. He sits close to the Prophet and begins a conversation by asking questions.

Key Teachings:

Islam (Submission): Jibril asks, "What is Islam?"
The Prophet responds with the five pillars:

Testifying that there is no deity except Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger.

Establishing prayer (salah).

Giving alms (zakat).

Fasting during Ramadan.

Performing pilgrimage (Hajj) if able.

Iman (Faith): Jibril then asks, "What is Iman?"
The Prophet explains the six articles of faith:

Belief in Allah.

His angels.

His books.

His messengers.

The Last Day.

Divine decree (Qadar), both good and bad.

Ihsan (Excellence): Jibril asks, "What is Ihsan?"
The Prophet replies:

"To worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, know that He sees you."

The Hour (Day of Judgment): Jibril asks, "When is the Hour?"
The Prophet responds that neither he nor Jibril knows, but he mentions signs of its approach, such as:

A slave giving birth to her master.

Barefooted, destitute shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings.

Aftermath:

Jibril departs, and the Prophet asks his companions if they know who the questioner was. They respond that Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet explains:
"He was Jibril. He came to teach you your religion."

Significance:

This hadith summarizes the core aspects of Islam: Islam (outward actions), Iman (inner beliefs), and Ihsan(spiritual excellence).

It emphasizes the importance of understanding and practicing these dimensions together.

It highlights Jibril's role as a teacher and reinforces the comprehensiveness of Islam.

This hadith is foundational for understanding Islamic theology, practice, and spirituality.

Adab in Islam refers to good manners, etiquette, and moral conduct in all aspects of life, including relationships with Allah, oneself, and others. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) emphasized that good character is essential for faith, as seen in his teachings and example. Morality in Islam is deeply connected to faith and affects one’s actions, speech, and interactions.

Adab towards parents includes showing respect, gratitude, and obedience while speaking kindly and making dua for them. Practicing good manners with parents strengthens faith, brings Allah’s mercy, and maintains harmony. Similarly, adab towards friends involves kindness, loyalty, trustworthiness, and avoiding gossip, which helps build strong and positive relationships, creating a supportive environment.

As students, having adab means respecting teachers, being humble, listening attentively, and seeking knowledge with sincerity. Practicing good manners in learning brings blessings, earns the love of teachers, and leads to beneficial knowledge.

Overall, adab enhances personal character, strengthens relationships, and brings inner peace and success in both worldly and spiritual life.
