Hinton, we learn that heroes do not always take the traditional form. Greasers, for example, are viewed very negatively throughout the novel--they are almost seen as anti-heroes in their community--however, when Ponyboy and Johnny save the children from the burning church, the children’s teacher tells Pony that he thinks that Pony, Johnny, and Dally are “the bravest kids [he has] seen in a long time” and that they were “sent straight from heaven” as “professional heros” (Hinton 94). Ponyboy is completely shocked by this statement and feels the need to clarify that he is a greaser. He does this because he has come to see greasers as incapable of being viewed by the world as heroes, but this statement made by this unassuming stranger makes it clear that anyone, even a greaser, can be a hero under the right circumstances.

It seems that The Soc's and Greasers rely on violence that solves all of their problems. Greasers can't walk alone too much or they'll get jumped, or someone will come by and scream "Greaser!" at them which doesn't make you feel too hot if you know what I mean (Hinton 2). When Ponyboy and Johnny were jumped by Cherry Valance's Boyfriend, Bob and they rest of his friends, Bob went straight to violence when he found out that Pony and Johnny sat with Cherry and Marcia. (the soc's girlfriends) Also, the greasers and Soc's have a rumble to see who is better. Instead they should have accepted each others differences and know that there are people that aren't lucky as you. All in all, violence plays a major role in The Outsiders by S.E.
Morgan Bidaut Mrs.Sental L.A. Period:2 December 2, 2016	One of the major themes in The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is loyalty. The novel shows us that loyalty is something earned. For example, when Johnny stood up for Cherry, Cherry said that Dally is mean and nasty. Johnny then said defensively that " 'Dally's okay' " (Hinton 26). Hinton then comes to the conclusion and says "You take up for your buddies, no matter what they do. When you're a gang, you stick up for the members. If you don't stick up for them, stick together, make like brothers, it isn't a gang any more. It's a pack. A snarling, distrustful, bickering pack" (Hinton 26). It is true, a gang is something that can not be broken, it is a pact, you are always part of it. A gang is a hoodlum's brotherhood, but a pack can lead to tyranny. All in all, loyalty is something that is earned and is something that can not be taken away from you.

Hinton really foreshadows a lot of events that will happen later on in the novel. An example of this is when Ponyboy “saw Johnny’s cigarette glowing in the dark and wondered vaguely what it was like inside a burning ember” (Hinton 47).

Pony wondering vaguely what being inside a burning ember is foreshadowing Pony and Johnny going into the burning church later on in the novel to save the kids inside the church is foreshadowed by this small detail that is very easy to just ignore.
Theme CER Eric Zhang Courage The novel The Outsiders by: S.E. Hinton has taught us about being courageous by writing in her novel how Ponyboy wanted to go to the rumble to help his gang the Greasers win against the Socs Ponyboy wanted to go even though he knows that nothing he does will work because he is too small. Darry has muscles and is very strong and the whole gang counts on him for the rumble, but wants the best for Ponyboy and Soda so he doesn’t want them to go to the rumble Two bits said that the skin fights didn’t hurt anyone so why not let them. The whole gang can trust Ponyboy and Ponyboy can trust them for backing him up in the fight. Two-bits”skin never hurt anyone”(Hinton 134)	S.E. Hinton also wrote that how Dally wanted to die because Johnny died.Johnny was the only person that understood him and counted Darry and the gang as family because his real family didn’t really care about him. Dally chose to die because he feels it is his fault that his only “family member” died because he help them get away and gave them his gun and fifty dollars. Darry is courageous because he died without a second thought.	Another character S.E. Hinton introduced is the hero Johnny he saved two kids lives in the fire but killed Bob when Ponyboy was drowning because of his command. Johnny loved the southern gentlemen because they were like heroes and rescued people. When Johnny was being jumped he always would have a scared look on his face but when he went to rescue the kids he had confident brave smirk on his face like he liked help others just like he helped Cherry the red haired Socs girl from Dally.

In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton there was may example of violence. A quote that shows that there is violence in the novel is ¨a rumble, when it’s called, is usually born of a grudge fight, and the opponents just happen to bring their friend along” (Hinton 11). This quote represents violence because it is telling the audience about what a violence is and how much violence there is in one. Another quote that has something to do with violence is “I’m gonna show’em off on you, little buddy, if you get any mouthier ” (Hinton 133). This quote also is just like violence because the person that is speaking is saying that I'm going to show my muscles to you is you don't stop talking which is just like saying that I'm gonna beat you up is you don't stop talking.
Lara Coby Mrs.Sental 12/2/16Period 2 Language ArtsTheme CER Stereotypes In the novel, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton we learn that it is what is on the inside that counts. For example, The Greasers are looked down upon because they are classified as “Hoods”. Based on their looks society judges them badly rather than the Socs who are judged better because of their appearance. In chapter 9 before the rumble the gang was getting pumped and excited. They were stating terrible things that society tells them. Steve Randall stated "Greaser... greaser... greaser..." Steve singsonged. "O victim of environment, underprivileged, rotten, no-count hood!" (Hinton 146). The Greasers dislike the fact that society looks down upon them just because of the way they look and their reputation. Steve sings this because he is sick and tired of the stereotyping against the Greasers and how the Socs are viewed greatly in society. This statement made by Steve shows how you may look at someone and be disappointed by looks , but you will never know what they really are like on the inside.

Hinton, the theme of violence is occurring often throughout
the novel. For example, the Greasers and Socs settle things by fighting, and at the end of the story the Greasers and the Socs have a big brawl. At the brawl, a Soc mentioned how, "[d]on't you know how a brawl isn't a brawl unless I'm in it?"(Hinton 143). Also, too add on, Pony states confidently that Darry would take on a few Socs at a time, " Darry always liked to take on two at a time anyway" (Hinton 141). The Greasers and the Socs are always looking to beat each other out in every aspect, but the Socs have more money, so they have a surveir advantage. The Socs are way overly-confident at the thought of being better than the Greasers because of money, cars, girls, and almost everything. All in all, violence is a major part of The Outsiders.

Also, Johnny kills David because Bob was drowning Ponyboy. Finally, two other Greasers get killed but, only one was violent. In the rumble no one was killed, if anything severely injured, Johnny has to kill David otherwise Ponyboy would have died. Dally was killed from a police chase and pulled out a gun on them. He wanted to be killed because he said he didn't have anything else to live for. Johnny is the only one that doesn't die harshly, he got severe burns and died in a hospital.

In The Outsiders a common theme that occurred a lot throughout the story was violence because the Socs and Greasers were two different gangs and they often jumped them when they were outnumbered. The Greasers liked having fair fights ,but the Socs didn’t care if it was fair or not .An example of violence in the story is when Johnny and Pony got jumped by the Socs at the park in the middle of the night.Johnny said to Pony “I killed him,”[He] said slowly”(Hinton 56).This shows that violence is a main theme because Johnny had to kill a soc just to save his friend from drowning by a group of socs. Then later on in the story Pony was explaining how strong and fit Darry is ,and also explained " Darry always liked to take on two at a time anyway" (Hinton 141). That is another show of violence because Darry likes taking on two people in a brawl or rumble. In The Outsiders there are way many more example of violence throughout the story because the Socs and Greasers always like to get into some type of action. The reason there is so much violence in the book is because the Socs think since they have more money, girls and better education then the Greasers it makes them over confindent.

In the outsiders, by S.E Hinton one of the major themes is violence. Violence is a major theme because throughout the novel two gangs Soc's and the Greasers, often have fights and get jumped. Specifically at the fountain were the two gangs had a fight and Ponyboy was getting drowned by one of the soc's , David, in the fight. Jonnny speaks to Pony, "I killed him," he said slowly. "I killed that boy." {Hinton 56}. Johhny killed the leader soc, Bob. Even though David was drowning Ponyboy, Johhny killed the leader to scare the group. Afterwards, Johnny is scared and upset about what has happened . Overall Violence is the number one of the major theme because its bascially what happens thorughtout the whole novel.

Greasers always get jumped by socs which also escalates into more violence. An example of violence in the story is when Pony and Johnny run away and later get jumped by socs. They get jumped because the some of the socs later found out that Pony and johnny were hanging out with their girlfriends. The socs found Pony and Johnny and held Pony under the water in the fountain trying to drown him while they are paying no attention to Johnny. He then stabs bob to make the crowd flee so that they would get off of Pony and so that they won't beat him up either. In the book Johnny says " I had to. They were drowning you Pony. And they had a blade... They were gonna beat me up."(Hinton 57). This shows violence because they were hurting pony as well as going to hurt Johnny. And since the socs did what they did johnny had to use violence as well to to defend himself and Pony by stabbing bob.
