• Light coach up each day - gets you back up to 100% recall = 12 month retention 

  • Choose imp things not everything 

  • It strengthens neural connections, making recall easier- building your network (highway)

• Your brain has all experience in your head

• When you are singing with music it activates this knowledge

  • This is not actually getting deeper knowledge and retention because its gone after the song ends

  • When kids just read over notes to study- does not work, not flexing the brain

  • Make associations to anything and it will help - the closer it is to the real thing the better

  • Notecards 

    • 1 side a glyph (picture) to associate word to 

    • On the back write the definition in your own words

      • don’t write the term - just put the first letter- makes your brain work more when they are reading it 

      • Write the answer in the lower corner

      • You can give them glyphs to choose from to help with symbols 

      • Pull kids up to you as they are getting them done- mix them up and then quiz them - build this into your class, then they can take them home 

• Connecting to something you know allows student to travel the road with tiny exits and bringing it back to keep going

  • put images in slide deck, then they look at each one and make connections 

  • Partner up to share what associations they made

  • Give pics on a slide with timer 

  • Ask question - What would Tom Hanks be?

    • Dog - he is in so many movies and dog is man’s best friend?

    • Another question could be - baseball game- it can be anything connected to your unit

    • Have kids talk about them then decide on one you like the best as a group 

    • Then look at all columns talked about then discuss what they all have in common  

Active Recall

  • No vocab terms in the cue

  • Put a main topic in the center of paper

  • Write as many things as they can think of that they have studied

  • Pull out notes and with a different colored pen add more that they need to know

  • 25 min - 1st 3 min you are going to run out of ideas, you know more you have to wait in that stall point, while you are waiting try to prompt yourself, asking yourself questions

    • Who are the pharoahs?  What did he have us take notes over?

  • 10 min - revision using your resources to write in a different color
