The country thought that these islands, were (4,800 km) west of California and would serve as an important stopping point for American ships on route to China.<br><br>The Samoa agreed to give Americans special trading rights and permission to build a naval station at the port of Pago Pago in 1867. Soon competition started growing so the Us, Great Britian , and Germany split the island to three parts without consulting the Samoans</strong></div>]]></description>
