In order for Pi to keep faith his religion guided him the way of the lord.  While Pi's boat sunk on the war to Canada, stranded on the ocean only helped him believe in his religions even more.  Good things started to happen to him like, starving and a swarm of fish started to jump out of the water onto his boat for him to eat.  Another example is Pi was caught in a storm and yelled that it should be gone and 5 minutes later the storm was gone.  Pi was nearly dying of thirst until his boat landed on a island that had plenty of water and food for him to eat.
When Pi was on the boat with his parents it sunk.  While it was sinking he got on a boat and it fell with nobody on it.  He left his parents on the sinking ship and they died.  While on the life boat he said to the lord 2 the lord  2 punish him.  Later on in the story Pi was punished with many things like bad weather no food or water.  But later good things started to happen to him.  In the end he felt really bad that he left his parents in the boat to die.
