Excessive planning was found to often be a box-ticking exercise, driven by accountability pressures rather than pupil learning. Teachers are frequently required to produce detailed, individual lesson plans that add little value. There is confusion between the process of lesson planning and lesson plans as the product.

Planning should be purposeful, not bureaucratic, and should support pupil progress, not serve as evidence for accountability. Teachers should be given time to plan together and Flexibility in planning is essential; one-size-fits-all approaches are discouraged.

We know all pupils benefit from excellent teaching but, as shown in this article from the EEF, excellent teaching really benefits SEND pupils, and we know from our session on planning that excellent planning leads to excellent teaching. Planning for SEND is also incredibly important, and this planning should be research informed around what benefits pupils - routines, exposition and modelling, flexible grouping, targeted interventions to name a few, alongside planning for specific adaptations depending on the needs of the pupils in front of you.
