The intention of this was to put the Vietnamese military under pressure and decrease their morale. North Vietnamese soldiers shot down US aircraft in retaliation (History.com Editors). The Vietnamese dug a series of tunnels for approximately 250 kilometers. The bombing bombed a supply route from the Vietcong to the Vietminh in Cambodia and Laos but did not affect the morale as they continued to use the route. The US citizens were not informed of the bombings as the military thought it would not be good publicity. Citizens were told that the military was enacting calculated specific strikes. The fortress was attacked five separate times, each time the United States forces were able to repel the attacking Viet Minh. The U.S. troops used scorched earth tactics dropping over 100,000lbs of bombs and launching 153,000 rounds of artillery and mortar fire. The siege of Khe Sahn was arguably the most important battle of the Vietnam war both in terms of supplies and it’s importance to the upcoming Tet Offensive. The massive U.S. concentration on the northerly base allowed Viet Cong soldiers time to infiltrate their marked targets in the south leading to the Tet Offensive. It was one of the last direct engagements before the end of the war and the massive amount of U.S. on an indefensible fortress helped sway public opinion away from the war. There were 30,000 troops from the U.S. and South Vietnamese combined. It was a search and destroy operation, where the forces were to eradicate the "Iron Triangle", a major stronghold of the Viet Cong northwest of Saigon. It was during this time that "tunnel rats" were introduced, where soldiers would volunteer to go underground to search and map out the many tunnels as well as fight underground battles. They destroyed hundreds of tunnel systems and captured tons of supplies and documents. Even with this achievement, the results of this operation were indecisive. The soldiers were able to push the Viet Cong out, but the Viet Cong would return a year later with the Tet Offensive.

This was a series of attacks from North Vietnam targeting over 100 cities and outposts in South Vietnam. Their goal in this was to stir up rebellion in the South Vietnam civilian population in hopes that the US would scale back involvement. This event severely decreased morale in the US resulting in the realization that this war could not be won at a reasonable cost.

On July 30, 1964, South Vietnamese ships, under the US military, attacks 2 North Vietnamese islands off the Gulf of Tonkin. On August 2nd, 1964 the US Maddox was attacked by a North Vietnamese torpedo boat squadron. The US Maddox was on an intelligence gathering mission at the time. During the attack, both side's initial missiles were missed. Two US carrier planes damaged 2 North Vietnamese boats and left one dead in the water.
