This video was interesting because a bunch of different people responded to the question: "what is a portrait?" and they all had the same 'generic answer' but then a different in depth answer afterwords. The portrait is a picture of a person, but you can tell a lot about the person by the portrait they made. Their identity is the in the portrait in more ways than one.

Also I found it fascinating that a persons life or experiences can be reflected in the art they show and it's not only about the art they paint but who they are. If you truly want to understand a piece of art you have to understand the artist.

I have done this on other self portraits before, where the portrait itself is realistic but the background speaks about the artist themself. Depending on weather it's colorful or monochrome, meticulously designed or somewhat chaotic. I think the background can say a lot about the artist.

When Frida Khalo painted herself with her chopped hair in her hand is shows a new found independence. I especially liked learning about Frida Kahlo and how she would change what and how she painted based on where she was in her life. I also love how she would paint herself the way she wanted and not how other people thought she should look. I think painting how you see yourself in a certain moment is a great way to document your life for yourself and the people that come after you. Now we can look back at her work and it kind of makes a timeline of her life. I also thought the general message about how art is all about perception was really intriguing.

In the video "How artists explore identity" it intrigued me how Frida Kahlo painted herself not as how she truly looked but what she saw when she looked at herself. She painted her heartbreak and sort of independence she gained with her divorce with Diego by painting her hair all chopped up and her wearing a suit instead of her usual traditional Mexican dresses, which were all things Diego liked about her. It sort of drew a message of "I'm not what he wants me to be, Im who I want to be."

I found the portrait of her in a suit with short hair to have a very powerful and independent message. She was effectively able to project her independence and her freedom from her marriage through a portrait. I find her amazing for not only her portraits, but also how she seemed like such a strong woman.

After watching the videos, I think one could really express oneself by using shadows and emotions, in addition with small things like scars, freckles, etc. to show the existence of trauma, or being out in the sun. The same goes for tears and wrinkles to express emotion in the face. You could also deepen the shadows to give a more serious effect. Always when drawing you have to think about the perspective of the audience and what they believe. Some believe that a drawing is a snapshot of what we are seeing, some believe it is a physical presence of our imagination. It also depends on the experiences you have as a person, on how you perceive artwork. Take Frida Kahlo for example, her self portraits changed based on her life experiences and how she viewed herself differently every-time. She was able to express her feelings of happiness, sadness, and those in between while drawing the same subject.

in the video "What is a portrait?" I found it interesting how the definition and personal meaning of a portrait are different for everyone. Some view it as an actual snapshot of a person in a set time or place but others see it as a way to show what humanity is through art and what exactly it means to be human through art. It was really fascinating how a portrait can feel so different to other people and that makes portraits even more deep and personal due to the intentions the artist had with painting them.
