         <description><![CDATA[<div>Upon completion of my Master of Education degree with an Academic Advising Certificate from Angelo State University, I hope to be employed as a High School Career and Guidance Counselor.  My focus will be assisting students of all walks of life through developing the necessary tools to be functioning members of society, whether they continue on with their higher education, join our military armed services, or seek employment following the completion of their high school requirements.   </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I discussed legal and ethical principles in relation to school counselors with Ashley Hardin, a High School Counselor for Axtell ISD located northeast of Waco.  <br><br>#1 David's Law - SB 179 - investigation of all "bullying" issues within 48 hours.  Difficult for counselors because they are not in charge of discipline.<br><br>#2 Family disputes dealing with parents and/or guardians and confidentiality, specifically married/divorced/separated parents.<br><br>#3 SB 11 Safety bill - need more leadership in building relationships with students and teachers through teaching conflict resolution.<br><br>#4 SB 426 - counselors should spend no less than 80% of their work time working on components for a comprehensive counseling program.<br><br>#5 SB 3 - pay increase for teachers and librarians but nothing about school counselors receiving a higher raise other than they normal step raise at their respective schools.<br><br>A.          <description><![CDATA[<div>A brief written for Education Dive (Busta, 2019) discusses that the re-authorization of the Higher Education Act, not done since 2008, is beginning to gain the support needed from both political sides of Congress; however, no one side is putting too much excitement in fear that another partisan stalemate could happen.  Both the Senate and the House have began work with education committees to discuss what policies and recommendations are the highest priority for college institutions including a look at increasing federal funds and limiting loan caps, distance learning, and student data.  President Trump is on board with the re-authorization of the Higher Education Act in support of both students and educators to maximize support on all levels.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>A brief written for Education Dive (Rosa, 2019) stresses the importance of providing the same level of support and resources to special education students in terms of college and career readiness.  Special education students should be considered a valued asset to any school district, and school administrators, staff and teachers should work just as hard at helping special education students make the transition from high school to college or the workforce as they would general education students.  Providing the same resources to special education students at specific modified levels, if needed, ensures that as they make the move from high school to a higher education institution or workforce, that they will not be overwhelmed more than necessary.  </div>]]></description>

         <title>Step 5 - What I learned about College and Career Readiness for Students with Disabilities.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>College and career readiness is at the forefront of every high school's goals.  It is during a student's high school career that they, hopefully, will learn the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to be functioning members of society once they graduate from high school.  However, unfortunately, students with disabilities are often left behind because they fall into a stereotype of not being able to fully function in our fast-paced society.  While much has been done in recent years to improve programs that will assist students with disabilities and their abilities to go to college and obtain a fulfilling career, there is still more that needs to be done to ensure that schools are not leaving these students behind.<br><br>Providing college and career readiness resources to general ed students, or students who do not require special education services, tends to lean towards making sure that those students are academically capable of handling the stresses of college life.  However, for students with disabilities, college and career readiness should focus more on crucial skills, "such as independence, self-determination, social and emotional skills and attitudes, critical thinking, lifelong learning, and employment skills" (Brand, Valent, &amp; Danielson, 2013).  <br><br>Students with disabilities usually have some aspect of an Individual Education Plan or 504 plan set for them in terms of their academic abilities and services.  These would be need to be closely examined and analyzed to make sure that services similar are, in fact, still maintained at a higher education institution to fulfill their needs.  State and local policymakers should continue to work and play a major role in helping school districts develop programs and resources that will allow students with disabilities to receive the same readiness resources needed to prepare for college and the workforce.  Much light needs to be placed on getting rid stereotypes and reducing limitations, and focus more on setting the bar higher for students with disabilities.  <br><br>As a high school counselor, I would need to be knowledgeable about what programs in and out of school can be utilized to focus on these skills with students with disabilities.  I will need to work with other teachers, administration, community members, and advocates for students with disabilities in the development of extracurricular activities, community work, after school programs, and work based internships that will provide students with opportunities to learn how to ready themselves for life after high school.  I would also need to make a conscious effort to attend professional development in regards to working with students with disabilities and preparing them for college and the workforce.</div>]]></description>
