What happened? : This week, as a class, we were introduced to this new programme Made2Move. We were made aware of the fundamental aims of the programme as well as establishing our roles in the programme. We were also introduced to Gillian O’Sullivan, one of the founders. This week we also had our first screening day in the Electrical Engineering Building. It did not go as well as expected due to a lack of organisation, therefore this week have a lot of improving to do before our next screening day!

What worked? : I felt that by dividing us into our pods in this session worked quite well as straight away we were able to start brainstorming session ideas together and get into the mind-set of becoming a Made2Move mentor!

What didn't work? : The fact the information was loaded onto us so soon and in such excess, I found this to be very overwhelming as it was our first week back in college. I immediately felt this huge responsibility upon my shoulders which led me to feel under a lot of pressure, even in just the first week of second year! During the screening day, jobs were not assigned prior to the event which made the event seem chaotic and disorganised.

What can I do to improve Made2Move and my role within it? : To improve my role or Made2Move, I could begin researching session ideas or even training/physical activity ideas and be prepared for when I get assigned a mentee.

What happened? : This week we reviewed last week’s screening day and came up with the following suggestions: Assign jobs to everyone before hand - avoid confusion and chaos. Collapse questionnaires and design our own compact screening tool. Give mentors their mentees' names prior to the event. Have mentor packs ready before hand. Have more than 1 circuit set up along with additional person per station - speeds up process. Gender specific measurer. Separate stations with screens? - More discreet. As well as this we looked at possible suggestions for mentee plans such as: Mardyke classes or jogging, along with resources and apps they could use to assist them.

What worked? : The information and tips we were given helped greatly this week as I were able to begin creating a resource bank for when I was going to be assigned a mentee. Also the information on the components of Health Related Fitness

What didn’t work? : I still haven’t received a mentee yet which is leaving me feel quite behind as I cannot begin to plan for them and the workload with other college modules is growing.

What can I do to improve Made2Move and my role within it? : To improve my role or Made2Move itself I could begin researching information on physical activity and exercise prescription and its links to Made2Move.

Week 3 ReflWhat happened? : This week we focused on actual session planning with Dr. Wesley O’Brien in the Mardyke. During this practical session he showed us the three fundamental components of a group session: such as dynamic warm-ups, fun games and challenges with progressions and closing a session with positive affirmation and a cool-down.

What worked? : I thought the session as a whole worked really well as it showed us the three defining parts of a session and upon this, Wesley enlightened us on the importance of relating the activity to its participant’s life experiences.

What didn’t work? : The only fault is this week’s work was the fact that Wesley’s session was slightly vague in the sense that it did not give us many actual activity ideas for the pod sessions in which we would have to begin preparing shortly.

What can I do to improve Made2Move and my role within it? : To improve from this week I could begin gathering creative ideas and suggestions from my peers to begin planning exciting pod sessions by building on the knowledge in which Wesley provided us.

What happened? : This week I finally got assigned two mentees during our second screening day in the West Wing. The screening took place in two separate rooms in the West Wing.

What worked? : This screening session worked so much better than the first as we had rectified all of the mistakes from week one. It ran very smoothly as everyone had assigned jobs, the screening tools had been collapsed since, therefore this session looked far more organised and less chaotic.

What didn’t work? : The fact that this group of 1st year maths science students had no say in their participation, were bombarded with this concept and had to be physically screened in front of their peers did not go well at all. These students were immediately put off which I know will greatly hinder their participation in this programme in the future.

What can I do to improve Made2Move and my role within it? To improve Made2Move or myself I will do my best on being as supportive and encouraging to my two mentees to ensure they get the best possible experience.

What happened? : This week Gillian spoke to us regarding motivation and its different types. Along with this Dr. Fiona Chambers introduced us to the first design sprint we would be doing for the development of the Made2Move programme. In a practical session with Wesley, we were shown very effective and simple exercises in which we could prescribe to our mentees. This is the first experience we have of exercise prescription within the programme.

What worked? : I found Wesley’s session to be extremely beneficial! Not only for us as mentors in this programme, but for us as participants in physical activity. The exercises he showed us were very simple but what made it even more helpful was the fact her provided us with regressions and progressions of them which will prove to be relevant when dealing with mentees of mixed ability.

What didn’t work? : Although the practical session was very helpful, in my situation one of my mentees is not into that type of physical exercise at all therefore I will have to research myself an appropriate activity for her.

What can I do to improve Made2Move and my role within it? To improve the club or myself I could begin to search for alternatives physical activities that would be more suitable for my mentees.

Gillian showed us cardio training, we did the mile challenge on the outdoor track and we were given an induction of the Mardyke gym and its exercise machines.

What worked? : I found this whole session to be very helpful, especially the gym induction in the Mardyke. I would not have been that confident using certain machines in the gym and would hesitate to recommend them to my mentees, however after today, I have become more familiar with them and in the future will recommend them to my mentees.

What didn’t work? : I found the mile challenge to be slightly challenging and daunting.
