General Hood's performance as a Confederate General ruined his reputation: he failed to stop Atlanta, Georgia from being captured by Union forces, and made terrible decisions on the battlefield that eventually destroyed his army.

During the battle of Gettysburg, his left arm was injured badly and became useless. Later, at the Battle of Chickamauga, his right leg was injured to the point of amputation.
