The Battle of Stones River took place in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Both sides were seeking a victory, since it would give them an advantage. However, the Union won this battle. Despite their opponents winning, this battle was important since it boosted morale in the North, and gave the Federals control of central Tennessee.

Tennessee provided the Confederacy with a large number of troops, and sent over 120,000 soldiers to fight. Tennessee sent more soldiers to fight in the war than any other Southern state. Between the years 1861 and 1865, seven battles happened in Tennessee, proving that it was very involved and affected by the Civil War.
