Maus Opening Chapters Discussion Board by Daniel Joseph

Flip through the opening Chapters of Maus and post a singular panel (or a series of no more than 3) that you want to bring up for discussion. Think about what makes this panel notable visually, contextually, and thematically. Label the panel location and deeper theme involved, and write a couple of sentences on why you chose this panel. Use the graphic novel terms as well! Use this PDF for screenshot purposes. https://uniteyouthdublin.files.wordpress.com/2016/01/maus-a-survivors-tale-my-father-bleeds-history-by-art-spiegelman.pdf Include your name at the top of the post. Be prepared to share out. I have posted an example for your reference. (9 minutes)

This moment from the prologue presents us with a clue to Vladek's past and the trauma he has been through. Spiegelman shifts to a Bird's Eye View perspective, potentially indicating that there are "bigger" forces at work influencing this relationship between father and son. The splash also denotes the significance of Vladek's belief that friendships can only truly be formed through hardship, ultimately illuminating the lifelong impact of traumatic events.

This moment in the book shows the true impact of what happened to the Jews in the background of the panel for Vladek. Spiegelman uses two different perspectives, one of the horrible incident of and one showing Vladek clearly distressed and emotional. It also notes at the fact that Vladek never feels safe, not even in his own home, while the Germans are out terrorizing everyone.

Vladek was in his house worried about going outside and in the upper part of the panel, you can see the worries and why he was so concerned about going outside. Maybe Mala is jealous, or just content with the idea that Vladek could be happy, since he’s so tired and cranky in the present day. This shows us how Mala genuinely wants Vladek to feel good and understands that he’s capable of happiness, despite them always bickering.

He uses a lot of emanata to show the emotions of these characters. I chose this panel specifically because in this moment the characters were showing a lot of emotion when there factory was robbed and the panels connect to the overall theme of Jewish people in Germany and Poland at this time having to be worrisome all the time.

The way the guard's bullet almost flies out of the page shows that if that bullet had hit Vladek, he would have likely died. This would mean that he would have effectively flown out of the book as well because he would not have any more story tell; his story would have ended there. This also implies that someone's story could have the chance to end at any given moment, even if they were doing nothing if note.
