The Staph infection was first detected in Aberdeen, Scotland in 1880 by surgeon Sir Alexander Ogston. The suspected infectious agent is Staphylococcus aureus. It is a bacterium. It is a non-moving tiny round shaped or non-motile cocci that stains Gram positive. Staphylococcus aureus is an emerging infectious disease. It is one of the most common disease one can get after injury or surgery.

According to the National Library of Medicine, the Staph Infection initally spread rapidly throughtout all of Europe, and eventually made its way to the other continents such as North America and Asia. Essentially, hospitals are the home of the Staph Infection and its bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus. The spread of the Staph Infection, or Staphylococcus aureus, is rapid, as the main mode of transmission is through contaminated hands. Symptoms usually appear in 1-10 days after contact with an infected person. Since 2017, there have been 120,000 staph infections and 20,000 associated deaths from the Staph infection, and its bacteria Staphylococcus aureus.

https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2019/p0305-deadly-staph-infections.html#:~:text=More%20than%20119%2C000%20people%20suffered,Control%20and%20Prevention%20(CDC).

https://doh.sd.gov/diseases/infectious/diseasefacts/staph.aspx#:~:text=Extremely%20variable%20%2D%20symptoms%20can%20appear,or%20duration%20of%20active%20lesions.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2796391/

The capacity of a disease or microbe to cause harm to a host is referred to as virulence. The Staph Infection, Staphylococcus aureus, pathogenicity includes a plethora of toxins and immune evasion proteins, as well as a large array of protein and non-protein components that permit host colonization during infection. In terms of the treatment and virulence, Staphylococcus aureus was methicillin-treatable until a few individuals acquired an early variant of the resistance gene from a distantly related species via horizontal transfer. The gene disseminated in conditions where methicillin resistance was advantageous, and ordinary, old S. aureus developed into MRSA. MRSA strains that occurred to have the ideal characteristics to live in hospitals thrived there — where they, coincidentally, had the perfect opportunity to pick up more resistance genes from other hospital-dwelling bacterial species that had previously been exposed to our high-end antibiotics. Essentially, it is an arms race between antibiotics and S. aureus.

https://evolution.berkeley.edu/evo-news/superbug-super-fast-evolution/#:~:text=the%20broader%20community.-,S.,aureus%20evolved%20into%20MRSA.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7872022/#:~:text=aureus%20produces%20an%20astounding%20array,been%20great%20interest%20in%20S.

https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/english/virulent

Due to the fact that Staphylococcus aureus is spread due to contaminated hands, it was crucial that healthcare workers remembered to change out their PPE, more specifically their gloves, when changing from patient to patient. MRSA, or Methicillan Resistant Staphylococcus aureas, is one of the biggest concerns of hospital workers. The main treatment for normal Staphylococcus aureus include: cefazolin, nafcillin, oxacillin, vancomycin, daptomycin and linezolid. If an individual has a wound that has been infected with the Staph infection, it is crucial that their wound be drained and cleaned. For more serious Staph Infections, like MRSA, physicians typically treat their patients with vancomycin. I could not find any other medical technologies used other than antibiotics they already use. That just means there is room for discovery!

https://www.cdc.gov/hai/organisms/staph.html

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/staph-infections/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20356227#:~:text=Antibiotics%20commonly%20prescribed%20to%20treat,resistant%20to%20other%20traditional%20antibiotics.

By analyzing the facility's staph infection statistics, putting prevention measures into place, and tracking results, healthcare facilities and leaders can make MRSA prevention a top focus.
Infections and dissemination have been stopped in many hospitals. This success depends on ongoing evaluation of facility data and application of preventative measures.
Many issues come from lack of communication from those leaders who analyze and release information about Staph infections and the front-line health care workers. Wearing and frequently changing personal protective equipment, and being aware and alert of MRSA infections in the hospital is crucial to staying healthy and away from possible infections.

MRSA, or Methicilin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, is still an ongoing issue today that primarily affects our healthcare workers and patients who spend time in the hospital. MRSA can manifest itself in many different ways, such as on the skin or in the lungs. Knowing that the hub in which MRSA's is most concentrated is the same place that care and treatment occur (the hospital) produces anxiety for workers and those who need care. The cost of treating an MRSA infection is estimated to be in the neighborhood of $3 billion per year in terms of healthcare expenses. The anxieties that individuals have about such a serious and perhaps fatal virus have a significant economic and social impact. It is crucial that awareness be spread about MRSA and how dangerous it is and that precautionary measures be put in to place.

https://www.contagionlive.com/view/what-are-the-social-and-economic-implications-of-mrsa

The most revealing aspect that I learned about Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is that the infected individual usually has an inflamed area of the skin that usually contains bumps filled with pus and is hot to the touch. The most surprising aspect I have learned about my disease is just how prevalent it is in hospital and healthcare setting and is a major risk factor for both patients and healthcare workers. One thing I came across in my research that could have been part of the Padlet assignment is just how many forms MRSA comes in depending on how an individual was exposed. MRSA can manifest itself into a respiratory infection, a skin infection, or a gastrointestinal infection. I feel that I could have talked about the different kinds of exposure and the resulting infections from MRSA in a separate Padlet.
