Children born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia have a risk of developing SNHL.
2. Bacterial meningitis can cause SNHL at birth.

causes of development:
1. It can be developed due to age-related hearing loss.
2. Long periods of loud noises can cause SNHL.
3. SNHL can, also, be caused by disease in blood vessels.

stats:
1. 15% of adults report having hearing trouble.
2. 2-3 out of 1,000 babies born every year are reported having hearing loss in at least one ear.
3. It takes someone about seven years to seek treatment after being affected by hearing loss.

Retinal Detachment

by: Anna Boyington, Laura Brown, Jaime Prine.

Overview: The retina is responsible for converting images into signals that the brain can interpret. The retina is located in the back if the eye and receives images from the lens, which it sends to the brain through the optic nerve. Retinal detachment is the separation of the retina from the back of the eye. The retinal cells die from oxygen deprivation and cause partial or total vision loss.

Symptoms- None of the symptoms are painful. The primary symptoms are..
1. blurry vision
2. partial vision loss
3. bright flashes of light in your peripheral vision
4. Areas of darkness
5. Suddenly seeing many floaters (debris from the detached retina)

Causes: 3 Types of Retinal Detachment-
1. Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment: this is when a person has tears or holes in their retina allowing fluid from within the eye to slip through the opening and get behind the retina. The pressure from this fluid can push the retina away from the retinal pigment epithelium, causing it to detach.
2. Traction Retinal Detachment: this occurs when scar tissue on the retina's surface contracts and causes the retina to pull away from the back of the eye.
3. Exudative Detachment: this is caused from an inflammatory disorder or Coat's disease, which causes abnormal development in the blood vessels behind the retina.

Treatment: In most cases, surgery is necessary to repair a detached retina. For minor detachments or tears in the retina, a simple procedure may be done in your doctor's office.

Outlook:
The cure for retinal detachment is to have a surgery to reattach a retina back into its original position. Most of these operations are urgent. If the retina has a hole or tear, then an eye doctor can use a laser to close the hole. If the retina has just begun detachment, a procedure pneumatic retinopexy may be done to repair it. Detached retinas do not get a supply of oxygen, and that can lead to dying cells, which leads to blindness.

Conductive Deafness

Overview: Conductive hearing loss occurs when there is a problem conducting sound waves anywhere along the route through the outer ear, tympanic membrane, or middle ear. This type of hearing loss may occur in conjunction with sensorineural hearing loss or alone.
Symptoms: There are a number of symptoms but they may not show up at the same time. People with conductive hearing loss will find it difficult to hear other people talking. Some may have a visible infection in the ear, a perforation of the ear drum, built up wax in the ear canal or tumor growth in the area. Another symptom of conductive hearing loss is otosclerosis, which is a growth of the middle ear bone.

Causes: Fluid in the ear, ear infection, allergies, perforated ear drum, benign tumor, impacted earwax.
Treatments: Ear canal can be surgically widened. Ear infections can be treated with antibiotics.

Hearing Aid: A small electronic device that someone wears behind their ear in order to make sounds louder so that a person with hearing loss can hear. A hearing aid works by magnifying sounds and vibrations. Any remaining hair cells detect these larger and louder vibrations or sounds and then passes them to the brain as if it were any normal sound. It consists of three different parts ~ A microphone, amplifier, and speaker. It receives sound through the microphone, which converts the sounds to electrical signals, and those signals get sent to the amplifier. The amplifier makes the sound louder, and sends it to the speaker

http://www.oticon.global/support/how-to/put-on-remove-hearing-aid/

By:Zavien/Lexi/Dakota

Overview: Cataracts-A dense, cloudy area that forms in the lens of the eye. A cataract begins when proteins in the eye form clumps that prevent the lens from sending clear images to the retina. The retina works by converting the light that comes through the lens into signals. It sends the signals to the optic nerve, which carries them to the brain. If not treated, it will develop overtime and eventually overtime distort your vision.

Symptoms:

Blurry Vision

Trouble Seeing at Night and dark areas

Seeing colors as faded or blurred

Increased sensitivity to glare

Halos surrounding lights

Double vision in the affected eye

A need to change glasses

Causes:
-Increasing age

-Smoking

-High blood pressure

-Obesity

-Diabetes

-Trauma

-Radiation Therapy

URL for Image:

http://www.morganhuangmd.com/cataracts

Treatment: Stronger eyeglasses or surgery

Outlook: Over time cataracts will cause total blindness if left untreated. However, if it is treated vision will come back over time. There really is no “cure” for cataracts but you can prevent it by having regular eye exams, stop smoking, eating fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidants, and keep diabetes and other medical conditions in check
