Allowing students to have choice over process, product, and/or environment can allow for all types of learners to be successful in a regular classroom environment. Allowing students to choose appropriate materials, or topics may increase interest. Allowing choice in the product will give students flexibility in showing their skills, and creating levels of support to allow the student to learn the skill at their own pace can create successful classroom differentiation. Using tables, groupings, or quiet spaces can also support specific learners to overcome the barriers faced in the classroom.

The classroom is an important part of learning. Having space, easily accessible tables, positive messaging, and a positive attitude are important. Creating a shared space that centres around respect for self, others, and the space is really key. The classroom and the class are a team, and allowing for opportunities to move, share, speak out, interact, and engage in different ways is important to making the classroom feel warm and welcoming.

What are my challenges? What makes me unique?) as part of my Career Education curriculum and it is always the first unit. The entire course is based on this self-awareness and I find it really helpful to unpack a lot of the negativity students have about their self-image. I feel like doing this in all subjects using the core competencies is really starting to take shape at our school through self-reflection and artifact gathering each semester.

I also have a better understanding of the types of reading and writing programs that exist, and some new ways of identifying struggling readers. I think that most challenging piece of reading and literacy in general, is that it needs to be a focus in all classes. Students need to be aware of strategies, and they need to have time to practice these reading strategies. There needs to be less focus on content and more on skills at this point. I often wonder how much COVID has hurt student's abilities in reading and writing.
