The flying shuttle is operated by a person, who sits with a newly woven cloth in front of them. Here they use treadles or another mechanism to help move the heddles up and down in order to open the shed in the warp threads. This is then combined with holding the shuttle in one hand to help guide its movement. The machine is typically used for fabric with a length of under 150cm, and uses rollers to reduce friction, making it easier to pass the material through the device. Although very complicated to use now, for the time, this was and still is a revolutionary machine, which changed the way fabric and cloth are woven.
