What recurring patterns( repeated or related words, images, etc.) can you find? What is the effect of these patterns or motifs? -In the Glass Castle, one of the recurring patterns that I saw was the repeated use of the authors reflection of the past. One example of this is in the second chapter, where the author reflects on one of her childhood memories, where she is engulfed in flames,"My dress was on fire. Frozen with fear, I watched the yellow white flames make a ragged brown line up the pink fabric of my skirt and climb my stomach... Then the flames leaped up, reaching my face."

How does the writer's diction(word choice) reveal or reflect the works meaning? The author paints an image of her life with the imagery that they create by using specific phrases. A couple of examples would be, "spin around in front of the mirror," "We lived in dusty little mining towns," and "The sun hung high in the sky." The author uses imagery in their writing to talk about their life.

How effective is the author's use of dialogue? How does dialogue enhance the storytelling? The author's use of dialogue helps enhance the story by providing the reader with hints of the characters life. An example of this would be when the narrator refers to their father as perfect, but then states that he has a drinking problem."In my mind, dad was perfect, although he did have what mom called a little bit of a drinking situation." This reveals the author's father characteristics as a alcoholic.

How do your values alter your perceptions of the text? When reading a section of a memoir, one comes to understand what the author intended for the reader to feel. But one's values will for sure make a different viewpoint of the book. Lastly, from what I have seen in the book so far, I have come to feel a similarity in events that the author went through such as growing up poor and not having enough money to live comfortably.

How might readers in different time periods or of different ages interpret the text? Readers who are older or are just simply adults, will not feel the same way as someone who is much younger than them, as they read along. This is because many teenagers don't have much experience in life and can't understand how or why things change.

Which of your personal experiences or memories is affecting your perceptions of the story? When I was younger, I lived in a small home with not enough money, which I have thankfully left behind. But this is only one of the experiences that I think are affecting my perception of this story. However I don't necessarily feel that this memoir is meant to provoke a feeling of sadness, but a feeling of nostalgia.

How do economic conditions determine the characters' lives?

Although the author of this book was really intelligent as a child, living in poverty, meant that she wasn't able to advance far into her life. But aside from poverty, she was also very young, and not skilled in adventuring the outside world. However, learning and being taught important things by her father, not having a lot of money meant that she wasn't able to go to a great school that would provide her with the resources that she needs to succeed in life.
