Consider the following hypothetical situation and answer accordingly:

Our College has decided to fund a business idea from the students of NCE-WR, particularly models that can provide a service or product that can make the campus more eco-friendly and/or energy efficient. Come up with a business idea to propose to the College authorities. Create a brief business profile by answering the following questions:

1. What problem/s in the campus would your product/service address?
2. How do you intend to address this problem?
3. How would you market your business elsewhere?
4. What is the target market for your product/service?

By Shazeb Sarang (7034).

    1. What problem/s in the campus would your product/service address?

A. As we know our college has many electronic equipments including computers, cables, circuit boards etc. We can use the old electronic waste which won't be in use to recycle it effectively. As technology Progress forward we would be left behind with outdated tech to be recycled and contributing directly to the environment.

2. How do you intend to address this problem?

A. First of all we would search our campus for any unused, outdated tech, cables, computers and separate their components in different sections and after doing all that we can use our Msc chemistry students for this work when they have a free time so that they could get involved in this project. The idea is to extract the essential elements from the electronic waste and as we have all the equipment for this like chemicals, the material to be recycled and proper labs for the toxic gases to be ventilated I assume this to be very efficient.

3. How would you market your business elsewhere?

A. We could first approach our local area community and ask the people if they have any such equipment which are outdated or better carry out a survey using internet and once we grow forward we could scale up the business and enhancing our work and techniques as well. Once we make our brand then getting recognized is easy. College will be known for a great cause and side by side make profits as well plus students will get experience and proper stipend for their work.

4. What is the target market for your service?

A. Mostly we would approach small companies which have these sort of requirements for recycling and since we are doing it in college most companies would agree to do so and would result in good relationship among the bodies. Then if we do each and every thing properly according to proper steps we would approach big companies as well and give them our demonstration and explanation about what we do and how we do it and how it affects the environment.

But as the synthetic growth media are expensive and the components used getting depleted day by day it is very inconvenient to use these media. The food media uses the leftover food from the canteen and provide nutrients to the experimental organisms. Thus cancelling two problems such as providing nutrient-rich media in cost effective way and using leftover food.

2. How do you intend address the problem?
• The food media helps the researchers, students and faculty members to grow organisms being cost effective.
Converting PLASTIC into FUEL!

By Ruheen Silledar

1. What problem/s in the campus would your product or service address?

All the students daily use a variety of packaged items especially food items, more prominently on fests and other occasions decorative items and all other materials creates a large amount of plastic waste which takes thousands of years to degrade, ending up in a landfill damaging our environment. Therefore, our aim is to convert this plastic into fuel which is eco-friendly and in future could replace the depleting fossil fuels.

2. How do you intend to solve this problem?

We can start with the following steps:

The first thing is to collect our own plastic and then by creating awareness about it we can choose a pickup location where people from various housing societies can come and dump their plastic waste. The truck driver then collects this plastic from various areas and takes it to the godown from where it is transported by a bigger truck to the main plant.

After the plastic has reached the plant, it is first segregated into hard plastics, MLPs, bags etc and then is put into a dust cleaning machine which cleans the plastic.

It is then put into an Aglo machine which reduces the volume of the plastic& makes it granular. Similarly, hard particles are put into the grinding machine & shredded.

The mix is then loaded into a reactor, catalyst is added, and the reactor is shut.

This process is thermocatalytic depolymerization which is an anaerobic reaction. It takes place in absence of oxygen as in presence of it, it catches fire.

Rather than being burnt this plastic is generally heated. Between 150 – 200 0 C, it melts & between 380 - 400 0C it polymerizes.

The oil that remains is polyfuel which can be filtered, stored & used for cooking in our own college canteens without using LPG. This technology setup can create many opportunities for students who want to start-up a business or any career related to waste recycling.

3. How would you market your business elsewhere?

In this process for every 100 kg of plastic waste,70-80 litres of oil is generated and with an estimated production cost of 24-30 rupees per litre, this polyfuel can directly be used as the source of burning without any need for further processing, so it can be sold at 40 rupees per litre(at a cheaper rate to houses where kerosene and firewood are still being used causing pollution.

Profit margin can be increased by selling it to oil manufacturing companies.

In this process, 3-7% of residual char or sludge is remained which we can sell to cement making factories and can be used to make bilumen roads.

4. What is the target market for your product/service?

Our target would be Schools, Colleges, surrounding housing societies, food outlets for plastic waste collection, Volunteers, NGOs for creating awareness about ill effects of plastic, oil manufacturing companies, Concrete/ cement making factories for marketing our product.
