Imagine you are Aaron Ralston as described from the passage.
Write a journal entry explaining your endeavors.
Begin your entry with "Today I"
Make sure to use your own words when you describe what is happening.
Write 1 1/2- 2 sides, allowing for the size of your handwriting.
There are up to 15 marks available for the content of your answer, and up to 5 for the quality of your writing.

Answer:
Today I arrived at the hospital, after grasping my life from the hands of death itself, due to my right hand being completely crush by what seemed like a500 kg rock, while climbing the blue John canyon in the Colorado desert, I remember it all so vividly, the agony and pain I was in, because I had decided to go alone on the spur of the moment due to my partners falling through on the plan.

After being there for around 3 days pondering on what I could possibly do, with my right hand still crushed under the rock, I decided that if I wanted to stay alive drastic measures had to be taken, I had then decided that I had to amputate myself, though I couldn't at first because my large blade was blunt,I managed to use my short knife after breaking my bone in my wrist and covering the open wound with some bandages.

This whole ordeal wasn't over yet though,I was still a long way from any kind of help, I knew that I needed to strap up then drop down 20 meters into the canyon then after touching the ground walk another 10 kilometers to my car, despite all my efforts I would've died if a rescue helicopter on patrol hadn't to spot me.

The doctors here were surprised to see me even walking after everything I had gone through throughout those six days in the blistering heat of the desert , with barely any water or food. Doctors had described my amputation as remarkable, as it was a perfect example of someone improvising in a dire situation, like I was in to save themselves, I was also told that if I hadn't to make the exact cut that I did I wouldn't have made it this far and still been alive.

I will always remember this as a spiritual experience, one where a hopeless dying man gained courage and hope that he might survive, I may never fully understand how I did it but I will always try to. I'd like to believe that this was the thoughts and prayers of people, probably most of who I don't even know.

DAY 1 (26TH APRIL 2003)
The gigantic boulder has almost number my entire arm, this leading to no feeling in my right. Although the pain is horrendous. I have managed to count my supplies and ration them for the next 3 days. I have collected 350 ml of water, and sandwich wraps. My only tools are a pocket knife and a mini scissor, aswll as a tourniquet.

DAY 2 (27TH APRIL 2003)
Last night waa extremely cold, actually it was unbearable. The cool breeze kept me awake all night. I am in soo much pain i am contemplating to cut my arm of with the pocket knife. My supply is almost over, my last resort will be to drink my own urine. I have 1 1/2 of my sandwiches left over, and need a solution to obtain warmth..... Otherwise i may not survive another night here.

DAY 3 (28TH APRIL 2003)
I cannot feel my entire arm, and the pain is excruciating. I have salvaged the courage to attempt to cut my arm of, but the big knife is to blunt yet still caused tremendous pain. The only other sharp object is the smaller knife. I have to cut through my skin, then the arteries and veins, and through the bone. All this just in time so i dont bleed to death.

DAY 4 (29TH APRIL 2003)
I managed to use the small sharp knife to cut through the skin and the arteries; the bone is to hard to cut and i am loosing strength. To cut through the bone im gone to have to keep sawing through. Its unimaginably painful, and i have lost alot of blood already. I cant wrap thw tourniquet unless i cut through the bone.

DAY 5 (30TH APRIL 2003)
I have blood all over my clothes aswell as the rocks, i have bled out more than one person should ever bleed to out. I have no food and have reached the stage of drinking my own urine. For warth i used bits of foil wrapping on my sandwiches to make a reflective layer aswell as a seal for the cold. I have made nearly no progress on the bone and am sslowing loosing conscious because of dehydration.

DAY 6 (31ST APRIL 2003)
I lost all consciousness last noght and got up to the end of todays sunset, it has started to rain aswell; its all heading downhill. The sawing of the bone is harder now beacause the rain is reducing the friction. Once the rain stopped i was luckily through the stage of cutting the bone and was able to wrap thw tourniquet. Once i was out of the gap there was a rescue helicopter flying over and noticed me. The recue helicopter flew me to the closest hospital. The doctors were really suprised to see me walk in withoit half an arm....

I never would’ve thought that I’d be able to leave, I knew for certain that my death was inevitable in Blue John canyon, but somehow I’m still alive. Perhaps it’s fate or absolute serendipity but something tells me it’s beyond the works of karma and human comprehension. The thought of leaving seemed more a fantasy than reality but I had nothing to work towards and survival seemed to be the most viable alternative.

I left the canyon and once I saw a helicopter hovering above me, I felt more alive than I had in the past six days. There, I knew that it was possible, that the chain of events could not have occurred solely due to happenstance. I didn’t just happen to be in the right place at the right time. Perhaps it was my tired body that had restricted my ability to speak or maybe it was the overflow of emotions that left me speechless (in the literal sense). Whatever the cause, words cannot describe how happy I am to know that I was given another chance and that I can finally sleep in peace and comfort. More importantly, however, I will finally be able to see my family!

I was often thinking about them during the six days in the canyon, I thought about how they’d find out if I had died or if they even would and what that must feel. I thought about the flurry of overwhelming emotions they must be feeling, too many…all at once. The guilt of it all put a heavy weight on me, growing heavier each day until it became more painful than the physical agony I felt between two rocks. Six days of solitude makes you think about a lot. Negative things mostly, but my will to survive overpowered the damaging thoughts.

I strategized mostly on rationing the few liters of water in my bottle and the painless ways I can execute my escape given the limited tools. I had a large knife that was too blunt to cut through my entire arm in a few swings; I had another utility knife, sharp enough to slice my arm but small enough to do so painlessly. Details so gruesome I can’t explain, but once I amputated my arm, I thought only about the next hurdle.

To me, the entire experience was an obstacle, a trial and a vehicle to test my strength spiritually. It’s hard to understand, maybe I never will get to the point of complete comprehension, but I believe it’s more than what it seems. To discontinue my passion would be a waste of the knowledge I’ve gained in those six days. It might seem crazy but adventuring and taking risks is a large part of who I am and what I’ve become, to stop my endeavors would be a bigger loss than whatever I lost down in the canyon.

A week after the horrendous fight for survival, I was fortunate by my will and tenacity I displayed against nature, yet it comes with a price, the consequences and sacrifices was not helpful as it took important things from me, yet it gave me some important life lessons in return.
Last week was the worst time of my life, I was a fool to not inform anyone of my departure to a canyon within Colorado in the desert, where a 500kg smashed my right hand against the rigid canyon wall, it was a long trek to the Blue John Canyon, I had to use my bicycle through a mountain path then walk down the canyon, worst of all no one knew where I was, which was a life-threatening mistake.
Three days had passed, no signs of life or any wandering individuals, though I astound myself on how long I was surviving, yet sitting around wasn't gonna do anything so I concocted a drastic method of escape with the aid of my multi-tool knife with me and straps to do the impossible, amputate my arm to get free, with the straps I can utilize them to stop bleeding to death.
With the knife in hand I used the blade to amputate my arm with the large bleed, though I realized it was too dull to pierce through, the following day I mustered the courage to use the shorter but sharper blade to pierce the skin, though with that I was not able to cut through I just managed to leave a huge gaping hole and realized that these tools were to inefficient due to their size and doubt if they are able to do anything.
After an agonizing 24 hours of pain and solitude, I mustered enough spare strength to break both of my arms and suprisingly freed myself despite my condition. However I was still not out of trouble yet I had to traverse a long way back to safety, I had to carefully strap up my right arm and found a way to strap myself down a 20m drop in the canyon only using rope and my broken left arm, once I got down I had a 10km walk back to my car, fortunately a rescue helicopter flew over head once I got down.
Finally once I was rescued by the helicopter and rushed to the hospital, I walked on my own into the hospital towards the emergency room on my own astounding the nurses and doctors with broken arms just strolling like nothing happened, with a crowd of the media just surrounding around me telling the tale of my survival and the horrific experience in front of the news and media, yet at the end I am just glad to have survived and tell the tale

I was very excited, since today was the day I would finally venture through the blue John canyon, however I did not expect the harsh situation I would find myself trapped in. A five hundred kilogram rock mercilessly crushed my hand and trapped me against the canyon wall.

I made a regrettable mistake when I foolishly did not mention to my partners which direction I was heading . I headed to cycle up a long mountain trail, left my bike and proceeded to walk down the blue John canyon, where I was met by the immense rock that trapped me.

I struggled, pulled with every way possible, desperatly, trying to free my crushed hand. Unfortunately the rock was too heavy and my efforts were futile. I shouted for help until my voice was too exhausted to scream. No one heard my cry for help and I felt hopeless.

After three days, I came to realization that I would die if i didn't improvise and I made a dcision I hoped I would never make, amputate my hand. I pulled out a multi tool knife and had straps at disposal, in order to stop the bleeding. I attempted to cut my hand, unfortunately the blade was too blunt to cut the skin, therefore the following day I used the smaller blade.

I failed to cut through the bone, which led me to breaking it and later used the straps to prevent the bleeding. To my fortune a helicopter had just arrived and transported me to a hospital. At the hospital many doctors were fascinated by how I managed to survive with no food and little water . They claimed that the way I managed to survive was remarkable.

Although this unfortunate event left me without my hand, I still believe I evolved as a person through this experience.

When the big rock came crashing down and trapped my arm, I felt a heavy rush of pain shooting through my arm. It felt like a thousand hammers banging against my right hand. The deep cut in my skin felt like an angry wound, red and painful. I was overwhelmed with fear cooking up inside me. No one was aware of my whereabouts and I then realized what a terrible mistake I had made. I felt like I couldnt breathe, that I would be stuck here for days or even years. I kept thinking about how this situation would be so much more different if I had brought someone along with me.

After three days of thirst ans hunger, I had given up all hope. The burning sensation in my throat grew more constant each day. The feeling of restlessness and pain took over my fear. I tried so hard not to think about the agonizing pain flowing around my arm. When I remembered I had the small knife multi tool in my pocket, I knew I had to do something to get my hand out even though the thought terrified me. When I finally had the courage to try it out, I cut through my skin. The pain felt unbearable but I knew I had to try and fight my way through it.

Once I was done cutting through my skin, I could see my bones which made it worse for me to handle. When I managed to break my bones, which made it worse for me to handle all at once. When I finally managed to break my bones, the pain got stronger and the rest of my body felt numb but it was then taken over by the relieveness and excitment of finally freeing myself after days of terrible torment.

The brave survivor

Aaron Ralston, a 27 year old mountain sports enthusiast from Colorado was taken by surprise when a 500kg rock smashed his hand between a canyon wall, leaving him pinned there for six days in the heat. Ralston struggled for six days in desperation trying to free himself from the calamity ahead as he knew he would be surely face death if measures weren't taken quickly, as he was left with the final option to amputate his arm off. Ralston’s situation was extremely unfortunate as he had forgotten to inform anyone about his whereabouts because his plans with his fellow cyclers had been cancelled so he had decided to head out alone, forgetting to informing anyone about where he was going. Ralston had cycled up a long mountain path, then left his bike there to walk down the Blue John Canyon when he was ambushed by a huge rock which had trapped his hand against the canyon wall.

Ralston struggled desperately trying to free himself from the heavy boulder, only to be left disappointed and dehydrated. Ralston knew he had to do something quickly in order to survive as no one knew where he was and help wasn't going to reach him quick. Ralston waited three long days before deciding that no one was going to come in time to help him and he would face death if the necessary action wasn't taken. He decided he needed to amputate his arm off if he wanted to live, the mere thought of the act was terrifying as anything could go wrong and for Ralston to cut of his own arm was a challenge itself. Luckily, he had a small multi tool knife with two blades; a large and small one, which he could use and straps that could be used to make a tourniquet to stop himself from bleeding to death. Ralston initially tried to use the large blade to try and amputate his arm off, only to realise it was very blunt and couldn't cut through his skin. The next day, he had tried with the small blade and managed to cut through his skin making a small hole in his arm, only to realise that the knife wasn't strong enough to cut through his bones.

However, on the fifth day Ralston didn't expect to survive the night but he had woken up at dawn with a burst of energy ready to free himself. Ralston had used the force of the rock to break his bones and then using the multi tool kit knife he successfully amputated his arm off, Ralston used the straps he had to tie around his arm to stop him from bleeding to death. Ralston's fight hadn't been complete yet as he had yet to descend down a 20m drop in the canyon with only a rope and one ar, and then walk back 10km to his car. Fortunately for Aaron's luck, the moment Ralston finished descending the canyon and into the open desert, the rescue helicopter was flying over head, ready to fly him to the safety of the hospital.

All the doctors in the hospital were completely impressed by Ralston as he had bravely walked in by himself after going through such a tough experience for six days. The doctors commented on the amputation explaining that "It's a perfect example of someone improvising in a dire situation"

Ralston's story has inspired many as his will to stay alive and take the required measures to survive was commendable, deeming him as a hero and a warrior. Ralston believes that his experience has a spiritual aspect to it as well and not only the challenge which he rose towards. In a news conference Ralston said, "I may never fully understand the spiritual aspects of what I experienced, but I will try. The source of the power I felt was the thoughts and prayers of many people, most of whom I never know.”

I am thinking of cutting my arm because at this point, i cannot figure any other way out

of freeing myself from this nightmare.

Day 4

All i have with me is a pocket multi tool knife that consists of a large and small blade. I tried using the larger blade but it turns out that its too blunt to do anything other than putting a scratch on my skin. I thought of using the shorter blade but i think i am going to wait a day or two to plan what i will do after succeeding in this painful procedure.

Day 5

It turns out that this blade does actually have the sharpness i require to cut through. So i tried it and guess what?, it cut through my skin. But unfortunately, its not going to get me anywhere if i'm planning on breaking the bone. So i thought of waiting and thinking about what i could do.

Day 6

I had had enough of this nonsense. I am going to focus all my energy on one point and just cut through. Success!, then i managed to break myself free and patch up the bleeding.

The moment i got out of the canyon, i could not be happier upon seeing a rescue helicopter right above me. I managed to get its attention and it rescued me. Wow, i sure have a lot of explaining to do when i get back home.

Dear Mom and Dad

A lot has happened these past few days including me losing a hand, I know right unbelievably stupid of me so let me start of from the beginning.

In an un-rationalised decision I decided to go bike riding in the desert with a couple of friends in the end i decided to ride solo on to a long mountain trail. After riding for a couple hours i decided to leave my bike and walk down Blue John canyon. While i was trailing the canyon a giant boulder crushed my hand I yelled for help but know one could hear since i didn't tell them where I was. Furthermore being the idiot I Was I chugged a massive amount of my water leaving me with only two thirds left to last me till I was hopefully rescued.

The pain was the worst each micro movement resulted in a massive jolt of agony, but in the end I knew what I had to do I timed myself to drink enough to stay hydrated and get a heat stroke. It was a loop for three days sweat it out, drink water, feel the chill of the night, pass out and sleep from the pain. On the third day started to use the large blade of my Leatherman to chip away at the rock after doing this for hours I realised it was a lost cause. Hours later I do what had to be done I had tried to cut my arm off but the blade was dull from chipping the boulder and could not pierce my skin.

Another two days went by determined i tied up a tourniquet to stop the blood flow and unfolded my small blade which was still sharp and stabbed myself knowing all I did was futile I realised that my bones would not yield to the blade. Thus I used the weight of the boulder break my bones (gives meaning to the term sticks and stones may break my bones) and sliced through the shattered bone and flesh, I did it finally broke free but my labours were not finished after lowering myself down to the floor i had to walk back to my bike. But in the end lady luck prevailed as a rescue helicopter was looking for me and me rushed to the nearest hospital where I now lay writing my letter to you to saying that I am alright and missing you guys and a hand.

Yours, Aron Ralston

My (belated) answer - 127 hours between a Rock and a Hard Place

Trapped and facing certain death, rock-climbing enthusiast Aron Ralston chose to make the ultimate option that later made him an international sensation; Using a blunt multitool, Ralston amputated his right hand, then crawled through the harsh wilderness on his way to freedom. Fascinated? You should be, as the climber was pinned under a half-ton rock for almost a week before he made that fated decision. The situation was made worse, giving that the fact that Ralston’s friends canceled on their plans, moreover he failed to notify anyone about his whereabouts. After cycling up a mountain path, Ralston left his bike at the top and was making his way down to the Blue Johnson Canyon, when the massive rock came out of nowhere, giving poor Ralston no time to react, as the rock fell upon and crushed his hand against the rock below. The massive rock was sitting on a ledge above the pathway he was travelling, giving no sign of instability before Ralston was almost beneath it.

As any good climber would do, he started to panic. He realised by then that he had forgotten to contact anyone before leaving, which made him into a sorry state of despair. Ralston tried everything he could to move the massive boulder off of his decimated hand, on the other hand his arm strength alone could not even budge the half-ton rock. The distressed man was left with nothing but disappointment. Not losing hope that his friends would notice he’s missing, Ralston waited three long, whole days all while dealing with the subconscious nagging at the back of his mind; he would have to move now or die. A thought struck him. However the idea itself was as gruesome as perishing in the canyon. He would have to cut his hand off to survive. Ralston took out his trusty multitool and examined the blades; he had a large and a small one. He made a makeshift tourniquet to stop his blood from gushing out, and tried to cut with the large blade, even though the blade was too blunt. Instead of cutting through, it barely even grazed his skin. On the following day, he tried cutting with the smaller one, moreover was successful in making a deep crevice in his hand, however the tiny blade could not cut through his bones.

On the fifth day he had almost given up, nevertheless Ralston was still surprised to find he could even get up from his peaceful slumber. He felt renewed and tried thinking of a way to cut through his bones, and came to the conclusion of shattering it with a sharp rock. He chipped away at his bones till they broke off and sawed through what remains of his arm using the knife. He tightened his tourniquet to stop the blood from spurting out and slowly descended the rest of the path down, with only a rope and an arm to use. He would then have to walk back 10km to reach his car. By sheer luck, the moment Ralston finished descending the canyon and into the open desert, a rescue helicopter was flying overhead, ready to fly him to the nearest hospital.
Ralston’s story inspired millions of individuals and reminded hikers, climbers and adventurers everywhere of the dangers of exploring uncivilised land without a companion. The story of Aron Ralston will be remembered throughout the world as a story of survival and the sheer determination of an individual when it comes down to the line.

Shao
